A multifunctional dielectric gradient metasurface optical device has a layer of nanoscale dielectric gradient metasurface optical antenna elements deposited on a substrate layer, arranged with spatially varying orientations, shapes, or sizes in the plane of the device such that the optical device has a spatially varying optical phase response capable of optical wavefront shaping. The spatially varying optical phase response is a spatial interleaving of multiple distinct phase profiles corresponding to multiple optical sub-elements, thereby providing multifunctional wavefront shaping in the single optical element.

Spatially multiplexed dielectric metasurface optical elements

A dielectric gradient metasurface optical device provides optical wavefront shaping using an ultrathin (less than 100 nm thick) layer of nanoscale geometric Pancharatnam-Berry phase optical elements deposited on a substrate layer. The optical elements are nanobeams composed of high refractive index dielectric material. The nanobeams have uniform size and shape and are arranged with less than 200 nm separations and spatially varying orientations in the plane of the device such that the optical device has a spatially varying optical phase response capable of optical wavefront shaping. The high refractive index dielectric material may be materials compatible with semiconductor electronic fabrication, including silicon, polysilicon, germanium, gallium arsenide, titanium dioxide, or iron oxide.

Dielectric metasurface optical elements

A method for space-variant manipulating of thermal emission from a surface of a material that supports surface waves includes providing a grating with a spatially varying grating parameter on the surface of the material.

Space-variant polarization manipulation of thermal emission

A method for Space-variant polarization manipulation of enhanced nondirectional thermal emission in a narrow spectral peak is disclosed, comprising providing a subwavelength grating irradiating non-directional thermal emission on the grating and discretely controlling the local orientation of the grating.

A wave-guiding system and method for mode-selective transmission of a spatially coherent light beam is disclosed. The system comprises a wave-guide with an inlet and an outlet for transmitting one or more modes; a first mode-shaping optical element for shaping the spatially coherent light beam before it enters through the inlet of the wave-guide to a desired mode of the wave-guide; and a second mode-shaping optical element for shaping light beam after it exits from the outlet of the wave-guide for obtaining a desired vectorial field.

Apparatus and method for excitation of a single mode in a waveguide

A space variant polarization optical element for spatially manipulating polarization-dependent geometrical phases of an incident light beam. The element comprises a substrate with a plurality of zones of gratings with a continuously varying orientation. The orientation denoted by &#x3b8;(x-y) is equal to half of a desired geometrical phase (DGP) modulus 2&#x3c0;. Each grating has a local period that is smaller than the wavelength of the incident light beam. In other embodiments of the present invention the substrate comprises a plurality of zones of gratings with a continuously varying orientation.

Geometrical phase optical elements with space-variant subwavelength gratings

An optical device includes a planar subwavelength grating () formed in a dielectric material and having a laterally varying, continuous grating vector. When used to modulate a beam of laterally uniform polarized electromagnetic radiation incident thereon, the device passes the incident beam with a predetermined, laterally varying transmissivity and/or retardation. When used to effect polarization state transformation, the device transforms a beam of electromagnetic radiation incident thereon into a transmitted beam having a predetermined, laterally varying polarization state. The device () can be used to provide radially polarized electromagnetic radiation for accelerating subatomic particles or for cutting a workpiece. The device () also can be used, in conjuction with a mechanism for measuring the lateral variation of the intensity of the transmitted beam, for measuring all four Stokes parameters that define the polarization state of the incident beam.

Space-variant subwavelength dielectric grating and applications thereof

An optical device includes a plurality of metallic stripes, arranged in a substantially planar, subwavelength grating having a laterally varying, continuous grating vector, deposited on a substrate such as GaAs or ZnSe. When used as a polarizer, the device passes a laterally uniform polarized beam of electromagnetic radiation incident thereon with a predetermined, laterally varying transmissivity. When used to effect polarization state transformation, the device transforms a beam of electromagnetic radiation incident thereon into a transmitted beam having a predetermined, laterally varying polarization state.
