Disclosed are articles having a thermoplastic photochromic coating. The articles exhibit a Bayer Abrasion ratio of at least 2 and desirable photochromic properties, i.e., the formation of darker activated colors and faster rates of photochromic activation and fade when irradiated with ultraviolet light.

Disclosed herein are visible light curable coating compositions that provide transparent and abrasion-resistant coatings when cured on a substrate. The coating compositions comprise a difunctional acrylate monomer, a multifunctional urethane acrylate, a mercapto modified polyester acrylate, an organic solvent, a sole photoinitiator that is activated in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum, and optionally, a colloidal silica component. This invention also relates to articles coated with the visible light curable coating compositions of the invention and processes for preparation of such coated polymeric substrates, such as processes for surface restoration of mounted parts, such as surface restoration of automotive headlamps.

A coating composition may include one or more radiation-curable resins having reactive groups in a hydrophilic region, a reactive surfactant comprising a reactive moiety; and a photoinitiator, wherein, upon the exposure of the photoinitiator to light energy, the one or more radiation-curable resins are cured to form a hydrophilic network with the reactive surfactant being bound to the network by binding of the reactive moiety of the surfactant to the reactive groups of the one or more radiation-curable resins. The cured coatings provide long lasting, washable, anti-fog properties.
