Dual-band antennas that are embedded within portable devices such as laptop computers. In one aspect, a dual-band antenna for a portable device (e.g., laptop computer) includes a first element having a resonant frequency in a first frequency band and a second element having a resonant frequency in a second frequency band, wherein the first element is connected to a signal feed, wherein the second element is grounded, and wherein the first and second elements are integrated within a portable device.

In a notebook type computer terminal, a plate type slot antenna is provided between a display panel and a surrounding wall of a display panel housing so that a radiator portion thereof is projecting from a frame of the display panel and a stay, which are made of conductive material by a length more than a predetermined dimension S. A ground portion of the antenna is connected not only to a ground of a radio transceiver unit but also to the display panel housing made of conductive material through the stay.

Integrated antenna for laptop applications

A call path display telephone system includes an establishment telephone and a user telephone. The establishment telephone includes a memory, communication module and controller. The user telephone includes a memory, microphone, speaker, keypad, communication module, controller, and a visual input/output module. The desired menu options for a call path are visually displayed to a user to allow the user to more rapidly and efficiently navigate through the call path menu. Unlike prior-art voice based systems, it is not necessary to sequentially listen to all available options; they can be rapidly viewed visually and selected as desired. A method of communicating call path menu data from an establishment to a user includes placing a telephone call from a user telephone of the user to an establishment telephone of the establishment, downloading the call path menu data from the establishment, visually displaying the call path menu data to the user, and then having the establishment accept a selection from the user in response to the visual display of the call path menu data.

An antenna for integration into a portable computing device is provided. The computer includes a display mounted on a metal frame. The antenna includes a radiating element extending from the metal frame, and a conductor comprising a first component for conducting a signal and a second component connected to the metal frame for grounding the antenna.

The present invention is directed to a computer system that has at least two computers which are connected via cordless telephone. The handset of the cordless telephone is integrated with a portable computer and the base station of the cordless telephone is integrated with a regular desktop or desk-side computer. The hand-held computer includes a microprocessor, a display, storage, a keypad to enter data, a microphone to receive voice data and speak to play voice data, and an antenna to communicate with the base station. The base station includes receiver and transmitter and an antenna, signal controller and the means for acting to a telephone system. The apparatus can be adapted for use with a television and a VCR.

Computers integrated with a cordless telephone

In an illustrative embodiment, the AC power line network simulator includes an enclosure for containing elements of the system. An AC coupling network coupled to the network simulator implements the functions relating to a particular simulation. A distribution panel connected to a power feed distributes power and includes outgoing circuits and circuit breakers for protecting the outgoing circuits. A plurality of outlets are connected to the breakers of the panel. Through the use of the simulator, with the AC coupling network, simulation of an AC power line network, such as measuring electrical signals, recording electrical signals, simulating electrical signals and inserting electrical signals, can be easily performed. The measured, recorded, simulated and inserted signals correspond to electrical characteristics of elements found in an AC power line network, and can be stored for later analysis. In addition, once simulation information has been stored, it can be reproduced as desired.

AC power line network simulator

A cordless modem comprises a radio pair interfaced to a standard data/fax modem which allows a user of a personal computer to wirelessly connect to a telephone line. One end of the radio pair is a remote unit interfaced to the modem contained within the PC while the other end is a base unit connected to a standard telephone wall jack. The base unit can selectively discriminate and adjust for signals received from a telephone voice handset or data signals received from the cordless modem remote unit. Upon receiving an off-hook signal or an incoming call signal, the base unit identifies the type of data (i.e., voice or computer modem data) and adapts accordingly by placing an FM modulator in either of a narrow band deviation or a wide band deviation covering the required range of the particular signal combined with local echo. That is, when voice data is present, a low deviation, narrow filter combination is selected. If, on the other hand, the computer data from the cordless modem is detected, a higher deviation, wider bandwidth filter is selected. In addition, the remote unit switches a pre-detection filter from one mode to another depending on whether it is connected to a computer modem or to a voice handset. Security from eavesdroppers as well as the mitigation of signal fading is provided by overlaying a pseudo-random number (PN) code on the FM modulated signal.

Cordless connection for a data/fax modem

A controlled environment radio test apparatus includes first and second chambers for receiving respective first and second radio devices therein. The chambers are sized in proportion to an operational frequency of the radio devices to be tested. A signal-carrying conductor is coupled to the first and second chambers to carry a radio signal therebetween. A signal control device is connected to the radio test apparatus and configured for adjustably introducing selected signal impairments into the radio signal in order to controllably impair the radio signal. An output coupler may be provided for monitoring the effect of the signal impairments on the radio signal. An input coupler may be provided for introducing one or more perturbing signals into the radio signal. The first chamber is adapted so that transmission control inputs can be provided to the first radio device and the second chamber is adapted so that reception monitoring outputs can be received from the second radio device. The first chamber may be further adapted so that auxiliary input and output signals are provided to and received from the first chamber.

Controlled environment radio test apparatus and method

A cordless modem comprises a radio pair interfaced to a standard data/fax modem which allows a user of a personal computer to wirelessly connect to a telephone line. One end of the radio pair is a remote unit interfaced to the modem contained within the PC while the other end is a base unit connected to a standard telephone wall jack. This arrangement allows the user the convenience and freedom of using a PC, laptop, personal digital assistant, etc., within several hundred feet of a phone jack without being encumbered by a cord. A warning alarm on the remote unit informs the user when the signal strength between the radio pair is below a threshold value. Additionally, the base unit may be equipped with two spatially separated antennas to help mitigate the effects of signal fading.

Cordless communication system for a portable computer modem

A computer system includes a chassis having an internal connector with a first portion in electrical contact with a first external peripheral device, and second portion in electrical contact with a second external peripheral device. An adapter is coupled between an internal device and the internal connector. The internal device is associated with either the first or second external peripheral devices. The adapter has either a first portion that connects the internal device to the first portion of the internal connector or a second portion that connects the internal device to the second portion of the internal connector in order to couple the internal device to its associated external peripheral device.

Mating adapter between a module and chassis of a computer processing

A computer system includes a chassis and a cartridge having separate functional components that interface with one another over a common bus. The chassis includes a plurality of user interface modules, which are generally designed and packaged according to a particular application/work mode, each coupled to a first bus. The cartridge, on the other hand, includes components that can be shared among the various applications/work modes. Specifically, the cartridge has a core processor and memory coupled to a second bus, and at least one slot for housing a communication module that is coupled to the second bus. In addition, the cartridge may be designed to be configured by the user to have a first form and a second form. The cartridge of the first form may be utilized for portable computer processing systems such as laptop, notebook and sub-notebook systems. The cartridge of the second form may be designed to be narrow enough to be utilized in smaller portable computer processing systems, such as hand-held systems.

The invention is a convertible display computer structure in which the display is centrally pivoted in a frame that in turn is hinged on one side on the keyboard so that the display can be positioned to face toward the user when the frame is positioned to be essentially vertical with respect to the keyboard and when it is desired to provide graphic information entry, the display can be turned over so as to serve as a writing surface when the hinged frame is positioned over the keyboard. The conversion from keyboard to graphic stylus input is accomplished by rotating the display on the pivot mountings and then closing the frame over the keyboard with the display surface up and in the proper orientation.

Convertible display computer

A method and structure permit the precision alignment in the packaging of optical components, such as lasers, detectors, lenses and waveguides. The technique involves capacitance measurements of an array of plates placed on the optoelectronic device chip and its package substrate. The technique uses phase sensitive detection to sense the total current capacitively coupled into a passive plate on the device chip from two overlapping plates located on the package substrate. When the device chip is properly aligned with respect to the package substrate, the summed current sensed with a third overlapping plate on the package substrate is a null.

Miniature electronic device aligner using capacitance techniques

Methods and apparatus are set forth for passively and precisely aligning pairs of objects, in particular, microelectronic components such as semiconductor lasers and fibers, utilizing fiducial marks. Additionally, methods and apparatus are set forth for combining passive and active alignment techniques where high degrees of alignment precision are required. Still further, techniques are described for fixing prealigned objects, independent of how the objects are prealigned, to a mounting surface in a manner that maintains the relative (aligned) position of the objects. Further yet, in order to help minimize manufacturing costs with respect to production of, for example, microelectronic assemblies, batch processing techniques are described which utilize the novel alignment procedures contemplated by the invention.
