Disclosed are solid catalyst components for the polymerization of olefins comprising a titanium halide or titanium alkoxy halide, and an electron-donor compound selected from silicon compounds of the formula ##STR1## where R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are hydrocarbyl radicals, supported on a magnesium halide in active form.
