Information is transmitted in a communication system having at least two communicating devices using a link between the at least two communicating devices provided at least via a radio communication interface of a radio communication system having a number of base stations that are interlinked via a base station network. The link is realized using channels arranged in hierarchical protocol layers. Channel-specific information is given to a hierarchical higher channel at least from one channel for the radio link between a communicating device and at least one base station. This hierarchically higher channel is an Internet protocol-based channel for the overall link between the at least two communicating devices.

For a communication system (e.g. UMTS with CDMA radio interface), the invention draws a distinction between services with high and low data rate dynamics and uses a matched type of signaling for the transport formats currently being used. The data rate of the data for a service can fluctuate greatly and/or rapidly over time (high dynamics), or may fluctuate only a little and/or slowly (low dynamics). The data for the services are transmitted via a common physical channel, with in-band signaling being used for signaling the transport format for the services with high data rate dynamics, and with signaling in a separate channel being used for the services with low data rate dynamics.

To achieve an improved disparate error protection in the transmission of coded symbols of an information stream, the information stream is supplied to a multiplicity of coding branches for coding, and is supplied in parallel, to a puncturing and multiplexing unit. Symbols of different quality classes are fed into each coding branch using a demultiplexer. An interleaver follows at least one demultiplexer for generating error protection for the filtered symbols. The symbols, which may possibly be interleaved, are coded in each coding branch and are supplied to the puncturing and multiplexing unit. The puncturing and multiplexing unit sets a predetermined coding rate.
