Disclosed are therapeutic treatment methods, compositions and devices for maintaining neural pathways in a mammal, including enhancing survival of neurons at risk of dying, inducing cellular repair of damaged neurons and neural pathways, and stimulating neurons to maintain their differentiated phenotype. In one embodiment, the invention provides means for stimulating CAM expression in neurons. The invention also provides means for evaluating the status of nerve tissue, including means for detecting and monitoring neuropathies in a mammal. The methods, devices and compositions include a morphogen or morphogen-stimulating agent provided to the mammal in a therapeutically effective concentration.

The morphogen and the nerve trophic factor can be admixed in combination.

Method of using recombinant osteogenic protein to repair bone or cartilage defects

The present invention relates to methods for identifying compounds that can reduce immune rejection, for example, transplant- or autoimmune disorder-related immune rejection. The present invention is based, in part, on the discovery, demonstrated herein, that immune rejection can be monitored by determining the amount of particular members of the Jak/Stat signal transduction pathway present within an affected tissue. The present invention is further based, in part, on the discovery, demonstrated herein, that immune rejection can be reduced and tolerance can be induced by modulating the amount of these particular members of the Jak/Stat signal transduction pathway present, expressed or active within an affected tissue. In particular, the results demonstrate that immune rejection can be monitored by determining the amount of mRNA or protein of Stat , Stat , Stat , Stat , SOCS , or SOCS present, e.g., in an affected tissue.
