A method to determine placement of sampled data within a data stream of a fixed rate communication channel is disclosed. The fixed rate communication channel transfers a serial flow of data packets over a serial or parallel communication channel. Each data packet has a header and a data stream. The method for transferring variable rate sampled data to a fixed rate communication channel begins by acquiring a sample of the variable rate sampled data. A data packet in which to place the sample is then determined. A location within the data stream where the sample is to be placed is also determined. A pointer to the location is placed within the header of the data packet. The sample is placed within the location within the data stream of the data packet and the data packet is then transmitted on the fixed rate communication channel.

Methods and system to transmit data acquired at a variable rate over a fixed rate channel

A method and system for issuing pen-input commands from a computer system to a controller for a touchpad to initialize the controller to the desired operating mode for the touchpad. The touchpad may emulate the function of a mouse pointing device or provide absolute coordinates of a pointed object such as human finger, a stylus, or a pen upon the touchpad. The pen-input commands will set the autocursor mode and boundaries for the edgezone and the deadzone upon the touchpad, the times for the presence detect signal to create the stroke signal, the threshold of movement of the pointed object upon the touchpad necessary to send the mouse protocols to the computer system, the mode of the pen-input mouse controller is to operate, whether the pen-input mouse controller is to send the mouse protocol or the pen-input computer interface protocol to the computer system, the averaging algorithm to used by the absolute coordinate calculator, the minimum pressure required to activate the touchpad, the parameters for the autocursor mode operation, and the time parameters for the autopower save circuit.

Command set for touchpad pen-input mouse

Systems and methods for the detection of motions of a pointed object upon a digitizing surface such as a touchpad is disclosed. The motions will be detected and converted to digital codes representing the absolute coordinates of the pointed objects upon the touchpad. The absolute coordinates will be translated into a stroke signal to interpret a single tap, a double tap, and a tap and drag of the pointed object on the touchpad. Further, multiple sets of absolute coordinates will be translated into a relative motion code that will contain the speed and direction of the pointed object as it is moved across the touchpad. The absolute coordinates will be interpreted by an autocursor controller to determine if the pointed object has transited between a workzone and an edgezone of the touchpad. If the pointed object is in the edgezone, a predefined relative motion code will be transmitted as an autocursor code. The relative motion code, the stroke signal, and the autocursor code will converted to an industry standard computer input mouse protocol an transmitted to a computer system to control a cursor upon a display screen.

The motions will be detected and converted in a multiplexing analog-to-digital converter to digital codes representing the location of the pointed object and the pressure of the pointed object upon the touchpad. The location and the pressure will be translated into a pen detect signal indicating the presence of the pointed object upon the touchpad. The pen detect signal will be translated into a stroke signal to interpret a single tap, a double tap, and a tap and drag of the pointed object on the touchpad. The digital codes will be averaged to minimize noise and formed into an absolute coordinates digital code. The absolute coordinate digital code, the pressure digital code, and the pen detect signal will be converted to a touchpad-computer interface protocol. Further, multiple sets absolute coordinates will translated into a relative motion code. The absolute coordinates will be interpreted by an autocursor controller to determine if the pointed object has transited between a workzone and an edgezone of the touchpad to generate an autocursor code. The relative motion code, the stroke signal, and the autocursor code will converted to an industry standard computer input mouse protocol. An autopower control circuit and a battery gauge circuit will determine and control the battery condition.

The digital codes will be filtered to minimize noise and formed into a filtered absolute coordinates digital code. The filtered absolute coordinate digital code and the pen detect signal will be converted to a touchpad-computer interface protocol and transferred to a computer system for further processing.

Method and system for noise reduction for digitizing devices

Systems and methods for the detection of motions of a pointed object upon a writing surface such as a touchpad is disclosed. The motions will be detected and converted in a multiplexing analog-to-digital converter to digital codes representing the location of the pointed object and the pressure of the pointed object upon the touchpad. The location and the pressure will be translated into a pen detect signal indicating the presence of the pointed object upon the touchpad. The digital codes will be averaged to minimize noise created by vibrations and variations in the motions of the pointed object held by the human hand and formed into an absolute coordinate digital code. The absolute coordinate digital code, the pressure digital code, and the pen detect signal will be converted to a touchpad-computer interface protocol for transmission to a computer system for further processing. The pen detect signal will be sense to determine if the pointed object has not been in contact with the touchpad for a long period of time and remove power from the circuitry controlling the touchpad. For battery power operations, a battery sense line will be connected to the multiplexing analog-to-digital converter to create a battery power set of digital codes which are manipulated in a battery gauge circuit to create a battery condition set of digital codes which are transmitted to the computer system.

Touchpad pen-input controller

A method and means for the control of a cursor upon a display screen of a computer system by a pointed object such as a pen, stylus, or finger upon an electrical writing surface is disclosed. The method and means will allow the cursor to continue to scroll across the display screen in a fixed direction and at a fixed speed once the pointed object has transited from a workzone region to an edgezone region of the touchpad. Once the pointed object is in the edgezone region, the pointed object may be stopped. If a different direction or speed of movement of the cursor is desired, the pointed object can be moved in the new direction to establish the new direction and speed of movement of the cursor. The control of the cursor will return to the normal movement when the pointed object returns to the workzone from the edgezone.

Automatic cursor motion control for a touchpad mouse

A multiplexed analog-to-digital converter to accept multiple dissimilar analog input signals and convert each analog input signal to a digital code that represents the ratio of the magnitude of the analog input signal to the difference of an upper reference voltage source and a lower reference voltage source is disclosed. The upper reference voltage source is selected by an analog multiplexer from a set of voltage reference sources that include the power supply voltage source of the analog-to-digital converter for analog input signals that are reference to the power supply voltage source, and a precision reference voltage source that is referenced to the band-gap of silicon to provide an absolute measurement of the analog input signal. The lower reference voltage source is selected by a multiplexer from such references as a ground reference source.
