A novel 1,1,2-triphenylpropene derivative, namely: ##STR1## acts on the endocrine system of rats. It exerts oestrogenic or antioestrogenic effects of varying strength in rats, and furthermore inhibits the growth of the mammary tumor induced by 7,12-dimethyl-benz(a)anthracene in rats.

The invention relates to 1,6-dimesyl-3,4-dimethyl-D-mannitol of the formula (I), ##STR1## wherein Ms is mesyl and Me is methyl. This compound is a potent cytostatic agent which can be used to advantage in the therapy of various tumorous diseases. 1,6-Dimesyl-3,4-dimethyl-D-mannitol is prepared according to the invention by subjecting 3,4-dimethyl-D-mannitol to partial mesylation followed by acylation, and splitting off the acyl groups of the resulting compound of the general formula (III), ##STR2## wherein Ms and Me are as defined above and R is a saturated lower aliphatic group, with an acidic alcohol.

The invention relates to a novel compound of the formula ##STR1## and the pharmaceuticlly acceptable acid addition salts thereof, wherein R stands for a hydrogen atom or methyl group, x y designates a ##STR2## Q is a hydrogen atom or a benzyloxycarbonyl- or N-tert.-butyloxycarbonyl protective group, and R.sub.1 is the side chain of a natural .alpha.-amino acid selected from the group consisting of Arg--, Tryp-13 , Phe--, Ser--, Leu--, Val--, Meth--, Tyr--, His-- or Prol---side-chain.
