Copolymers and compositions containing copolymers having advantageous viscosity, friction reduction, dissolution, pH-stability, and temperature-stability are provided. These copolymers can be used as rheology modifiers for oil field applications.

Fast dissolving, water soluble, hydrophobically-modified polyelectrolytes

Compounds, compositions and methods of use thereof are provided, the compounds comprising a hydrophobically modified polyelectrolyte comprising a nonionic monomer, an ionic monomer, a monomer having the structure of Formula 1, and a monomer having the structure of Formula 2, wherein R, R, R, R, R, and Rare independently hydrogen, unsubstituted alkyl, substituted alkyl, carbonyl, carboxyl, aryl, or alkaryl; Ris linear Cto Calkyl; Ris branched Cto Calkyl; Xand Xareindependently &#x2014;C(O)O&#x2014;, &#x2014;C(O)NR&#x2014;, &#x2014;O&#x2014;, &#x2014;C(R)O&#x2014;, -arylene-, -arylene-C(R)O&#x2014;, -arylene-C(R)N(R)&#x2014; or -arylene-C(R)N(R)&#x2014;; Rand Ris independently hydrogen or a Cto Calkyl; and wherein a molar ratio of the monomer of Formula 1 to the monomer of Formula 2 is from about 1.5:1 to about 15:1. The compounds are useful as viscosifying agents in oil and gas applications.
