A system for charging electric vehicles is disclosed, comprising: vehicle chargers coupled to an electric power grid; and a controller in communication with the chargers and vehicles and configured to execute software to cause the controller to: determine characteristics of each vehicle, the characteristics including a charge capacity of a battery system of each vehicle and a mission schedule; determine characteristics of each charger, the characteristics including a type of each charger and a charging capacity; process the characteristics of each vehicle and each charger to identify charging opportunities for each vehicle over the course of a time period; and perform a peak power optimization analysis to generate a vehicle charging profile configured to activate a minimum number of chargers simultaneously and to minimize downtimes of the plurality of chargers to thereby distribute the power demand from the electric power grid and result in an initial peak power demand.

Internal combustion engine and method to increase the temperature of a liquid in the internal combustion engine

Systems and methods are disclosed for determining a temperature of a coolant in a cooling system for an engine and diagnosing a thermostat in the engine responsive to the determined temperature. A system includes a liquid cooling system including a thermostat, the liquid cooling system structured to circulate a coolant, and a controller coupled to the liquid cooling system and the EGR system. The controller is structured to: receive engine heat data indicative of a first amount of heat introduced into an engine; receive heat loss data indicative of an amount of heat loss experienced by the coolant; determine a temperature of the coolant based on the first amount of heat and the amount of heat loss; compare the determined temperature of the coolant to a sensed temperature of the coolant; and determine a status of the thermostat responsive to the comparison.

Systems and methods for diagnosing a thermostat

Systems and methods are disclosed for determining a temperature of a coolant in a cooling system for an engine and diagnosing a thermostat in the engine responsive to the determined temperature. The system and method includes interpreting engine heat data indicative of a first amount of heat introduced into the internal combustion engine; interpreting exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) heat data indicative of a second amount of heat introduced into the internal combustion engine via the amount of exhaust gas provided to the intake manifold; interpreting heat loss data indicative of an amount of heat loss experienced by the coolant; determining a temperature of the coolant based on the first amount of heat, the second amount of heat, and the amount of heat loss; comparing the determined temperature of the coolant to a sensed temperature of the coolant; and determining a status of the thermostat responsive to the comparison.

System and method for turbocharger compressor surge control

A method segments iris images from eye image data captured from non-cooperative subjects. The method includes receiving a frame of eye image data, and determining whether a pupil exists in the image by detecting glare areas in the image. Upon finding a pupil, subsequent images are processed with reference to the pupil location and a radius is calculated for the pupil. A k means clustering method and principal component analysis are used to locate pupil boundary points, which are fitted to a conic. Using the pupil boundary, an angular derivative is computed for each frame having a pupil and iris boundary points are fitted to a conic to identify an iris region between the iris boundary and the pupil boundary. Noise data are then removed from the iris region to generate an iris segment. A method for evaluating iris frame quality and iris image segmentation quality is also disclosed.
