An improved process for converting hydrocarbons using a catalyst which is periodically regenerated to remove carbonaceous deposits, the catalyst being comprised of a mixture containing, as a major component, solid particles capable of promoting hydrocarbon conversion at hydrocarbon conversion conditions, and, as a minor component, discrete entities comprising at least one spinel, preferably alkaline earth metal-containing spinel, and a minor amount of at least one added component selected from the group consisting of alkali metal components, calcium components, barium components, strontium components, beryllium components and mixtures thereof.

An improved process for the production of alkaline earth, aluminum-containing spinel compositions, preferably magnesium, aluminum-containing spinel compositions and at least one additional metal component, comprises combining alkaline earth metal, aluminum and additional metal components at selected pH conditions to form a precipitate and calcining the precipitate to form a spinel composition. The product spinel composition, is particularly suited for use to reduce the amount of sulfur oxides emitted from a catalyst regeneration zone, e.g., a catalytic cracking unit regeneration zone.

Preparative process for alkaline earth metal, aluminum-containing spinels

An improved process for the production of alkaline earth, aluminum-containing spinel compositions, preferably magnesium, aluminum-containing spinel compositions and preferably further comprising at least one additional metal component, comprises adding a basic aqueous solution containing at least one aluminum component to an aqueous solution containing at least one alkaline earth metal component to form a precipitate at defined pH conditions and calcining the precipitate to form a spinel composition. The product spinel composition, preferably with included additional metal components, is particularly suited for use to reduce the amount of sulfur oxides emitted from a catalyst regeneration zone, e.g., a catalytic cracking unit regeneration zone.

A passivation process for decreasing the poisonous effects from contamination by metals such as nickel, vanadium and/or iron that can occur during the catalytic conversion of hydrocarbon feedstocks containing such metals is disclosed. The process involves an in situ aluminum passivation for conversion catalysts containing an alumina-containing phase by means of soluble aluminum species contained in that alumina-containing phase.

A process for reducing the sulfur and ash content of coal comprising the steps of: (1) contacting coal particles containing ash and iron pyrite mineral matter with a promoting amount of at least one conditioning agent, said conditioning agent having a ferrous component maintained at a pH of from about 5.5 to 11.0 and being capable of modifying or altering the existing surface characteristics of the pyrite under conditions to effectuate alteration of modification of at least a portion of the contained pyritic sulfur; (2) agglomerating the coal particles while said pyrite surfaces are altered or modified in an aqueous medium with hydrocarbon oil to form coal-hydrocarbon oil agglomerates; (3) separating said coal-hydrocarbon oil agglomerates from pyrite mineral matter and ash to recover coal-hydrocarbon oil agglomerates wherein the coal exhibits reduced sulfur and ash content.

A process for the removal of metal poisons such as nickel, iron and/or vanadium from a hydrocarbon conversion catalyst which includes the step of contacting the catalyst with a sulfur-containing compound to convert at least a portion of the metals on the catalyst to a sulfur-containing metal compound. The weight % sulfur on the thus treated catalyst is controlled to about 40-90%, preferably about 40-75%, of the weight % of the total nickel, vanadium and iron on the catalyst. Preferably, the sulfur-containing compound is hydrogen sulfide in admixture with a reducing gas such as hydrogen and/or carbon monoxide. This step facilitates metal removal in subsequent processing steps.

The coal-oil aggregates are separated from ash and mineral matter in the slurry by gravitational means. Optionally, the coal particles may be treated with a conditioning agent prior to the aggregation step. Recovered coal particles comprise a substantial part of the feed carbon values.

Disclosed is an aqueous phase oxidation for removing at least a portion of metal contaminants such as nickel, vanadium, iron or copper from a catalyst used in a hydrocarbon conversion process. The aqueous phase oxidation comprises: contacting a sulfided metals contaminated catalyst with an aqueous solution comprising soluble metal nitrate ions and a catalytically effective concentration of nitrite ions. Optionally, the sulfided catalyst which has been oxidized can be further treated with an aqueous oxidative and/or reductive wash. The oxidative wash preferably follows the reductive wash for optimal results.

Demetallization process for a conversion catalyst

A process for reducing the sulfur and ash content of coal wherein coal particles are treated with a conditioning agent in an aqueous slurry prior to agglomeration with a minor amount of hydrocarbon oil. After separation of the coal-oil agglomerate from ash and mineral matter remaining in the aqueous slurry, additional oil is added to provide a slurry of coal particles in hydrocarbon oil. Agglomeration of remaining ash and mineral matter is effected by addition of a minor amount of water. After separation of the mineral agglomerate and recovery from the oil slurry, treated coal particles are substantially reduced in ash and sulfur content.

A process for reducing the sulfur and ash content of coal comprising: treating coal particles in a hydrocarbon oil slurry with minor amounts of a conditioning agent and water to effect agglomeration of ash and pyritic sulfur mineral matter; separating the agglomerates from the slurried coal particles; and recovering coal particles from the hydrocarbon oil.
