A technique enables sealing of downhole components by providing a downhole pressure barrier for communication lines. The system comprises a communication line cementing sub that may be coupled into a tubing string. The cementing sub comprises a flow passage, a radially protruding region, a first connector, and a second connector. The first connector is generally disposed on a first longitudinal end of the radially protruding region, and the second connector is disposed on a second longitudinal end of the radially protruding region. Additionally, a passageway extends through the radially protruding region from the first connector to the second connector. The first and second connectors enable routing of a communication line through the radially protruding region.

Downhole pressure barrier and method for communication lines

A technique enables the efficient connection of communication lines in a well application by substantially reducing online rig assembly time. The technique reduces online time of the rig by sealably fastening a first connector of a downhole connection assembly to a segment of a communication line during offline assembly time to substantially reduce the online time requirements. The first connector is later connected to a corresponding second connector while the rig is online to complete the downhole connection assembly that joins communication line segments.

System and method for connecting communication lines in a well environment

A hydraulically set packer assembly actuated over an electronic line. The assembly includes a hydraulic packer setting mechanism that serves as an intensifier that is activated by way of an electronic trigger. As such, the trigger may be electronically coupled to an electronic line that is conventionally available for surface communications between surface equipment and a downhole gauge. The gauge generally present for monitoring well conditions such as pressure. Thus, a separate dedicated hydraulic or other powering line need not be outfitted as part of the assembly. Once more, for sake of gauge and well monitoring integrity, communications with the setting mechanism may be severed upon setting of the packer.

Method and apparatus for setting a packer

A technique enables wireless communication of signals in a well. The technique is employed for communication of power signals and/or data signals between a mother wellbore and at least one lateral wellbore. A first wireless device is positioned in a mother wellbore proximate a lateral wellbore, and a second wireless device is positioned in the lateral wellbore. The power and/or data signal is transferred wirelessly between the first and second wireless devices via magnetic fields. A plurality of the first and second wireless devices may be employed in cooperating pairs to enable communication between the mother wellbore and a plurality of lateral wellbores.

A system that is usable with a well may include a piston, a primary control subsystem and an override subsystem. The piston actuates the downhole tool, and the primary control subsystem may be connected to at least one hydraulic line in order to move the piston in response to pressure that is communicated to the tool via the hydraulic line(s). The override subsystem may be connected to the hydraulic line(s) to override the primary control subsystem and move the piston in response to pressure communicated to the tool via the hydraulic line(s).

Overriding a primary control subsystem of a downhole tool

A downhole measurement system may comprise an optional fluid inlet section configured to accommodate fluid flow between a well and a zone surrounding the well. The system may further comprise a flow conditioning section configured to receive the fluid from the fluid inlet section. The flow conditioning section may be configured to produce a substantially homogenized fluid flow. In addition, a measuring section may be provided and configured to measure at least a portion of the fluid flow from the flow conditioning section. The measuring section characterizes a parameter of the fluid flow. In other embodiments, there may be a method for characterizing a parameter of a fluid flow comprising the steps of directing the fluid flow to a flow conditioning section. Other steps may be conditioning the fluid flow to a substantially homogeneous state and measuring a parameter for at least a portion of the fluid flow.

Downhole annular measurement system and method

A technique enables efficient deployment of instrumentation gauges in a wellbore. The technique comprises preparing offline a plurality of assemblies having a combined packer and gauge mandrel with an associated gauge. Each assembly is combined with a segment or length of instrumentation cable that is fully spliced with the gauge during offline assembly time. Various splice halves also can be assembled during offline assembly time.

Method for efficient deployment of intelligent completions

A system and method is provided to measure a pressure or other characteristic at a source (e.g. a hydraulic power supply) and in or near a downhole tool. A comparison of the measurements is then made to verify that the system is operating according to desired parameters. In specific applications, the comparison can be made to ensure the supply of hydraulic fluid is reaching the downhole tool.

Downhole measurement system and method

A method of installing a sensor located in a chamber on the out-side of a casing, comprising the steps of positioning the casing in a well, cementing the casing in position, positioning a drilling tool inside the casing level with the chamber, drilling through the casing, chamber and cement into the formation surrounding the well so as to create a fluid communication path, and sealing the hole drilled in the casing.

Deployment of underground sensors

One aspect of the present invention is a system and method to measure a pressure or other measurement at a source (e.g. a hydraulic power supply) and in or near a downhole tool and compare the measurements to verify that, for example, the supply is reaching the tool. Another aspect of the present invention is a system and method in which a gauge is positioned within a packer. Yet another aspect of the invention relates to a gauge that communicates with the setting chamber of a packer as well as related methods. Other aspects and features of the system and method are also described. The present invention includes a communications system to measure and transmit date from a zone of interest below a downhole assembly to a remote location. The communications system preferably includes a sensor gauge engaged through a communications port of the downhole assembly upon a communications cable whereby the communications cable and sensor gauge have substantially the same outer profile diameter.

Measurement device and support for use in a well

An electrical cable for use in a downhole application is provided. The cable includes an elongated support layer and an array of insulated conductors bonded to said elongated support layer. The elongated support layer substantially bears a weight of the conductors.
