There is disclosed a cemented carbide tool containing tungsten carbide, titanium carbide, nickel and cobalt, molybdenum and chromium. The composition of the materials provides a good resistance to corrosion as well as high hardness and wear resistance. These properties are particularly interesting for the manufacture of tools for coldforming operations. Cold forming tools made with these materials have steady performance over a long period of time.

Corrosion resistant tool

The present invention relates to a cemented carbide tool for the deep drawing operations, especially as the ironing dies, of the manufacturing of aluminum or steel beverage cans. The cemented carbide comprises WC with an ultra fine grain size, a binder phase of Co, and grain growth inhibitors (V and/or Cr), wherein the Co content is from about 5 to about 10 wt-%, and with a specific relation between HV30 and cobalt content.

Tool for coldforming operations with improved performance

A cemented carbide tool containing tungsten carbide, titanium carbide, niobium carbide, possibly TaC, cobalt, chromium and possibly nickel, iron, molybdenum is disclosed. The composition of the materials provides a lighter material than usual, combined with a good resistance to corrosion as well as high hardness and wear resistance. These properties are particularly interesting for the manufacture of punch tools for cold forming operations. Cold forming tools made with these materials will have much better performance, particularly more steady performance and much longer lifetime. A method of cold forming and drawing, particularly deep drawing and ironing process of aluminum and steel beverage can manufacturing, is also disclosed.

A cemented carbide seal ring has at least one hard phase in a binder phase based on Co, Ni and Fe which results in a content Fe, Ni and Cr of less than 50 &mgr;g/l of each in a leach test with deionized water at 85&deg; C. performed according to the requirements of British Standard BS6920: Section 2.6: 1996.

The present invention relates to cemented carbide tools for coldforming and drawing operations. The cemented carbide comprises WC with an average grain of <1 &mgr;m and 0.5-4 weight-% binder phase consisting of Co and Ni, <0.5 wt-% Mo, and <1 wt-% grain growth inhibitors V and/or Cr. The weight ratio Co:(Co&plus;Ni) is 0.25-0.75 and the structure contains 1-5 vol-% of finely distributed eta phase with a size <5 &mgr;m.
