A sewing machine comprises a bed 3 on which a work-supporting table 3a is defined and from which a post 4 carrying a cantilevered support arm 5 provided with a needle-holding head 6 at its free end, rises up. An upper shaft 9 performing a rotating motion is housed within the arm 5 and it imparts a reciprocating movement, through a connecting rod-crank linkage 10, to a needle bar 11 vertically slidable in the head 6. Along the upper shaft 9 a plurality of eccentrics 19, 20, 21 are distributed to which auxiliary sewing operation devices 22, 32, 39 detachably associated with the sewing machine 1 are operativley engageable through respective connecting rods 23, 33, 50 and transferring motion mechanisms. A preformed opening 5 is formed in the support arm 5, through which connecting rod 50 is mounted to eccentric 21. An opening 36 is formed in support arm 5 through which stem 37 passes. As a result of the preformed openings in the support arm and the eccentrics along the upper shaft, the sewing machine of the present invention provides for the connection of auxiliary sewing operation devices, through the preformed openings, and to the eccentrics on the upper shaft of a basic version of the sewing machine.

A control device for trimming knives on flat-bed sewing machines comprises a rocking lever 19 fulcrumed on a fixed pivot 20 and receiving an oscillatory motion from a connecting rod 18. The rocking lever operates a movable knife 14 through a drive group 21 provided with a movable pivot 29 slidably engaged in an elongate shaped opening 30 associated with the the rocking lever. A disengagement group 40 enables the movable pivot 29 to be brought from an engagement position in which it is in engagement with an engagement portion 30b of the elongate shaped opening 30 to operate the movable knife 14, to a disengagement position in which the movable pivot slides within a curvilinear portion 30a of the elongate opening in order to deactivate the movable knife 14. The displacements of the movable pivot 29 take place upon command of a disengagement lever 32 slidably engaging said pivot in the region of an elongate guide opening 32a. The movable pivot is axially locked by a plate 38 fastened to the disengagement lever 32 by means of a screw 39 and provided with an elongate slide opening 38a engaging the pivot in the region of a circumferential groove 41 formed thereon.

A device for orienting a chain of stitches severed from a completed workpiece which includes a suction intake element for aligning the chain with the sewing axis, a clamping device for holding the chain in alignment with the sewing axis and a cutting means for severing that portion of the chain protruding from the clamping device so as to control the length of the chain to be incorporated into the initial stitches of a seam.
