Stair climber apparatuses have a control circuit that controls the speed and torque of an electric motor and controls an output torque direction of the electric motor. The control circuit controls the speed of the electric motor and the output direction of the electric motor to maintain a constant speed of travel of a plurality of stairs in a downward direction along an inclined support when an operator is stepping on the plurality of stairs in an upward direction. When a change in output torque direction of the electric motor torque is required to maintain the constant speed of travel of the plurality of stairs in the downward direction along the inclined support, the control circuit controls the speed of the electric motor down to a zero speed. Methods are for operating the stair climber apparatuses.

Stair climber apparatuses and methods of operating stair climber apparatuses

Stair climber apparatuses have a frame having an inclined support that extends from a bottom portion to a top portion; a plurality of stairs that are connected together in series and travel in a loop around the inclined support; an electric motor; and a control circuit that controls a speed of the electric motor and an output direction of the electric motor. The electric motor is operatively connected to the plurality of stairs so as to move the plurality of stairs in an upward direction along the inclined support and so as to alternatively move the plurality of stairs in an opposite, downward direction along the inclined support. An operator input device at the bottom portion of the inclined support inputs a boarding command to the control circuit. Based on the boarding command, the control circuit controls the electric motor so as to move the plurality of stairs along the inclined support. Methods are for operating the stair climber apparatuses.

In a biometric sensor provided for use with an exercise apparatus and having a pair electrodes for sensing a biopotential signal, a common-mode rejection circuit can be used to cancel noise in the signal resulting from various sources including motion of the apparatus.

Noise cancellation mechanism

A microprocessor based exercise treadmill control system is disclosed which includes various features to enhance user operation. These features include programs operative to: permit a set of user controls to cause the treadmill to initially operate at predetermined speeds; permit the user to design custom workouts; permit the user to switch between workout programs while the treadmill is in operation; and perform an automatic cooldown program where the duration of the cooldown is a function of the duration of the workout or the user's heart rate. The features also include a stop program responsive to a detector for automatically stopping the treadmill when a user is no longer on the treadmill and a frame tag module attached to the treadmill frame having a non-volatile memory for storing treadmill configuration, and operational and maintenance data. Another included feature is the ability to display the amount of time a user spends in a heart rate zone.

Treadmill control system

A microprocessor based exercise treadmill control system is disclosed which includes various features to enhance user operation. A motor control for exercise treadmill having an AC motor is disclosed which includes various features to enhance operation of the treadmill. These features include a motor control that can vary by shifting or staggering the phases of drive signals applied to the motor in order to reduce treadmill frame vibration. The features also include having the motor controller increase the slip of the motor to improve low speed operation of the motor and to increase the amperage of the drive signals when the motor is operating at a given speed in order to maintain that speed. In addition, a power factor control circuit can be used to increase the efficiency of the motor.

Treadmill motor control

A climbing exercise apparatus is provided having a frame on which two pedals are pivotally mounted to provide a user with a vertically reciprocating exercise movement, and a control panel for user input and output. A dynamic break, alternator or the like applies a variable level of resistance (via a suitable transmission) against the user's movement. The resistance varies over time in accordance with a control signal generated by a computer. The value of the control signal is independent of the rate at which the user steps. A display successively displays images of hills. Each hill is associated with one of the series of values, and that value is graphically represented as part of or in visual association with the hill image.

Exercise apparatus and method for simulating hill climbing

An exercise apparatus for measuring heart rate is provided which comprises a sensor for generating a signal which includes the biopotential signal produced by a heart. This signal is filtered, amplified and digitized. A computer autocorrelates the digitized signal. A plurality of signal indication routines then scan the autocorrelated output for the presence of periodic signals. Each of the signal indication routines uses different search or filter criteria, such as peak and wave form detection, and generates one (and in some cases, several) candidate heart rates. An arbitrator then selects one of the candidate heart rates according to predetermined criteria. These criteria include the value of previously selected heart rates. In one embodiment, the signal indication and arbitration routines are especially well-suited for measuring the heart rate of a user while exercising on a stair climbing machine or treadmill.

Apparatus and method for measuring heart rate

An exercise management system is disclosed for maintaining a user's level of exercise intensity (such as measured by heart rate) at a target level while exercising. In one embodiment, the system includes a movement member (such as pedals) which is engaged by the user to provide an exercise movement. The movement member is selectively adjustable to varying the intensity of exercise performed by the user. A heart rate sensor indicates the user's heart rate, and a computer adjusts the movement member in accordance with the heart rate signal to establish and maintain the user's heart rate near the target level. The user may periodically disengage the heart rate sensor for a limited time, during which time the computer maintains the user's heart rate near the target level by adjusting load in accordance with the user's rate of exercise (such as measured by rpm).
