A cooling gas ventilation chimney is provided for enhancing the heat transfer of an end region of a dynamoelectric machine. The dynamoelectric machine includes a rotor having a plurality of radial slots. A plurality of coils are seated in the radial slots, and the coils form a plurality of radially stacked turns. The ventilation chimney includes one or more chimney slots defined in at least a portion of the radially stacked turns. The chimney slots extend in a substantially radial direction to the rotor, and some of the chimney slots have an axial or circumferential length different from other chimney slots.

Heat transfer enhancement of ventilation chimneys for dynamoelectric machine rotors

A rotor is provided for a dynamoelectric machine having one or more windings. The windings have one or more turns, and the turns have one or more outlet ducts that are located near a chimney. When the outlet ducts are stacked one on top of another, they form substantially radially oriented passages. The heat transfer performance of a portion of the rotor can be improved by locating two or more circumferentially spaced radial ducts near the chimney. A chimney can also be formed of one or more chimney slots defined in at least a portion of the turns, where one or more chimney slots extend in a substantially slanted direction to a radial direction of the rotor. A transition region of the rotor can also include one or more diagonal flow channels, which discharge into one or more chimneys.

Heat transfer enhancement of dynamoelectric machine rotors

A stator for an electrical machine includes teeth assembled from a plurality of stacked laminations mounted on a cylindrical protective surface thereby forming a plurality of slots. The stator also includes an armature winding assembled within the teeth by inserting components of the armature winding into the plurality of stator slots from positions external to the teeth in a manner that facilitates mitigating potential for coil distortion. The armature winding includes a plurality of coils that each include an end winding. The stator further includes a segmented yoke inserted around the armature winding in a manner that facilitates mitigating a potential for disturbing the end winding of the coils. Independently assembling the stator components in this manner facilitates varying a thickness and/or the number of heat conducting laminations between the yoke and teeth that subsequently facilitates heat transfer from the armature winding to an outer pressure casing of the machine.

An electrical machine to facilitate transporting fluids through a pipeline is provided. The machine includes a stator, a rotor magnetically coupled to the stator, and a housing enclosing the rotor and the stator. The housing includes a wall that facilitates channeling a first fluid at a first pressure through a portion of the housing. The machine also includes a stator enclosure defined by at least one wall that facilitates maintaining a second fluid within the stator enclosure. The stator enclosure is positioned within the electric machine housing. The stator enclosure has at least one wall that substantially isolates the second fluid from the first fluid such that only the second fluid is in flow communication with the stator. The stator enclosure has at least one wall that facilitates heat transfer from the second fluid to the first fluid. At least a portion of at least one of the stator enclosure walls is configured to facilitate equalizing the first pressure and the second pressure.

A wind generator includes: a nacelle; a hub carried by the nacelle and including at least a pair of wind turbine blades; and an electricity producing generator including a stator and a rotor carried by the nacelle. The rotor is connected to the hub and rotatable in response to wind acting on the blades to rotate the rotor relative to the stator to generate electricity. A cooling system is carried by the nacelle and includes at least one ambient air inlet port opening through a surface of the nacelle downstream of the hub and blades, and a duct for flowing air from the inlet port in a generally upstream direction toward the hub and in cooling relation to the stator.

Wind turbine generators having wind assisted cooling systems and cooling methods

A gas cooled dynamoelectric machine is provided that is comprised of a rotor, a rotor winding comprising axially extending coils and concentric endwindings, and a plurality of spaceblocks located between adjacent endwindings thereby to define a plurality of cavities, each bounded by adjacent spaceblocks and adjacent endwindings. To enhance the heat transfer rate from the copper end turns of the field endwinding region, at least one spaceblock has a trailing edge or downstream wall contoured to reduce generated wake. In a preferred embodiment, the trailing edge has an aerodynamic contour to reduce the extent and strength of the generated wake.

To enhance the heat transfer rate from the copper end turns of the field endwinding region, the downstream wall of at least one spaceblock is contoured to lower a suction pressure developed at the trailing edge of the spaceblock. In a preferred embodiment, the downstream wall of the spaceblock has a re-entrant contour to enhance the rotating cavity cooling flow.

To increase endwinding cooling, at least one of the spaceblocks has a passage extending between first and second adjacent cavities to provide for cooling flow communication between the first and second cavities through the spaceblock. A flow deflector is preferably provided adjacent a radially inner end of one, the other, or both of the cavity facing surfaces of the spaceblock for directing flow into or out of the first and second cavities, respectively.

Flow-through spaceblocks with deflectors and method for increased electric generator endwinding cooling

A cooling system for a rotating electrical machine, such as a power generator, includes a cooling fan that serves to exhaust hot gas from an interior of the machine, a seal ring surface defining a passage for the exhausted hot gas, and a clearance seal positioned in the passage between a rotating body of the machine, such as a generator rotor, and a non-rotating body of the machine, such as a generator stator, to prevent the exhausted gas from entering an inlet to the rotating body. The seal ring surface is shaped to impart sufficient momentum to the exhausted hot gas to prevent the exhausted hot gas from leaking into the rotating body inlet. The contoured shape of the seal ring surface immediately downstream of the rotor is positioned such that the high velocity fan discharge stream is directed to flow along this surface. The high through-flow momentum of this gas stream does not allow any backward flow, thereby eliminating hot gas leakage. With this construction, the accurate and tightly controlled clearances of previous constructions are no longer required and may be greatly relaxed, providing a lower cost, more effective and higher efficiency sealing system.
