An electrostatic printing process is disclosed wherein a printing roll is formed by forming a latent magnetic image in a magnetic imaging member, decorating the latent magnetic image with a nonconductive magnetic toner to form a toner image, transferring the toner image to a conductive member and temporarily fixing the toner image to the conductive member. The toner image on the conductive member is electrostatically charged, while the charge is dissipated from the remaining area of the conductive member. The charged image of magnetic toner is decorated with an electrostatic toner comprising a colorant and a binder resin to form an electrostatic image which is transferred to a substrate. Pattern change is accomplished by washing off the fused toner from the conductive print roll and forming a new fused toner image on it.

Electrostatic printing process

Disclosed is a magnetic developing unit having a decorator for applying magnetic toner to a latent magnetic image in a downwardly moving magnetic imaging member. Preferably the imaging member is in the surface of a cylinder and the decorator is at the 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock position. The decorator comprises a housing containing a lower toner supply and background cleaner roll, an intermediate toner transfer roll and an upper toner decorator roll. Each of the rolls comprises a rotating non-magnetic sleeve and a plurality of elongated internal magnets which alternate in polarity adjacent the rotating sleeve and their relative positions are adjustable.

A process is described for printing dyes onto a textile material comprising the steps of forming a latent magnetic image in a magnetic imaging member comprising a ferromagnetic material on an electrically conductive support; developing the magnetic image by applying a ferromagnetic toner comprising a ferromagnetic component, a dye component which is substantially sublimable at from 160.degree. C. to 215.degree. C., transferring the developed image to a substrate comprising a continuous belt comprising a thermally stable, dielectric, non-dye-receptive material; covering the developed image with a layer of a thermally stable resin which is permeable to said dye component bringing the continuous belt into contact with a textile material to be dyed while the belt and fabric are rotated upon a heated drum, with the textile material facing the covering layer of resin of the continuous belt, to thereby transfer said dye component from the continuous belt to the textile material; washing and drying the continuous belt.

Magnetic printing of disperse-dyeable textile material

A process is described for dyeing a textile material, comprising the steps of: forming a latent magnetic image in a magnetic imaging member comprising a ferromagnetic material on an electrically conductive support; developing the magnetic image by applying thereto a ferromagnetic toner comprising a ferromagnetic component, a dye component containing a dye which is substantially sublimable at from 160.degree. C. to 215.degree. C., and a resin, which substantially encapsulates the ferromagnetic component and the dye component; transferring the developed image to a first surface of a thermally stable sublimable-dye-permeable polymeric film; bringing the polymeric film on a second surface thereof into contact with a textile material to be dyed; heating the textile material and polymeric film to thereby transfer the dye image from the first surface of the polymeric film through the polymeric film to form a dye image in the textile material.

Printing process

A process is described for printing dyes onto textile material comprising the steps of forming a latent magnetic image in a magnetic imaging member comprising a ferromagnetic material on an electrically conductive support; developing the magnetic image by applying thereto a ferromagnetic toner comprising a ferromagnetic component, a dye component which is substantially sublimable at less than 215.degree. C., and resin which substantially encapsulates the ferromagnetic component and the dye component; transferring the developed image to a substrate comprising a continuous belt comprising a thermally stable, dielectric, non-dye-receptive material; transferring the developed image by heat and pressure to film of a thermally stable resin which is permeable to said dye component laminating paper or a film to the image bearing side of the film, and bringing the laminated film into contact with a textile material to be dyed while the film and fabric are rotated upon a heated drum, to thereby transfer said dye component from the film or films to the textile material. In a preferred aspect of the invention another film is laminated to the side of the film supporting the image and the dye is simultaneously sublimed to two textile materials several times.

A process is described for dyeing a disperse dyeable material such as a textile or film comprising the steps of forming an image comprising a dye component which is substantially sublimable at from about 160.degree. to 215.degree. C., on a film of a thermally stable resin which is permeable to said dye component covering the dye image with a paper web or a resinous material and bringing the film into contact with a disperse dyeable material to be dyed while the film and disperse dyeable material are rotated upon a heated drum, with the disperse dyeable material facing the surface of the film opposite the side supporting the image, to thereby transfer said dye component from the film to the textile material.

A process is described for dyeing a disperse dyeable material such as a textile or film, comprising the steps of: forming a latent magnetic image in a magnetic imaging member comprising a ferromagnetic material on an electrically conductive support; developing the magnetic image by applying thereto a ferromagnetic toner comprising a ferromagnetic component, a dye compnent containing a dye which is substantially sublimable at from 160.degree. to 215.degree. C., and a resin, which substantially encapsulates the ferromagnetic component and the dye component; transferring the developed image to a paper sheet, applying a thermally stable sublimable-dye-permeable polymeric material to the side of the paper sheet bearing the toner image material into contact with a textile material to be dyed; and heating the textile material and paper sheet to thereby transfer the dye image from the paper sheet through the polymeric material to form a dye image in the textile material.

A process is provided wherein film (e.g. polyester) which has been dyed by at least one disperse dye, is contacted with textile material in the presence of sufficient heat to cause the dye to sublime or vaporize and transfer some of the dye from the film to the textile material, thereby effecting level dyeing of the textile material. Both the film and textile material have affinity for the dye, and softening points which are higher, and glass transition temperatures which are lower, than the temperature needed to effect sublimation or vaporization and transfer of the dye. Also a process is provided wherein film is continuously dyed with at least one disperse dye and thereafter continuously contacted with a textile material at elevated temperature so as to sublime or vaporize the dye and transfer dye from the film to the textile material.

Process for level dyeing of textiles by heat transfer

A process of heat transfer printing the surface of a filled polymeric article, wherein the filled polymeric article consists essentially of an inorganic filler, preferably alumina trihydrate, and a polymer with an affinity for disperse dyes, preferably polymethyl methacrylate. A desired design is printed onto a carrier using sublimable disperse dyes. The filled polymeric article is preheated, the carrier supporting sublimable disperse dye is placed in intimate contact with the preheated article, and sufficient heat is applied to cause the dye to sublime, then diffuse into the surface of the article.

Magnetic printing apparatus for forming on a substrate a colored print of an original colored design, said apparatus comprising a ferromagnetic printing means which is imposed on an electrically conductive support; means for forming on the ferromagnetic printing means a magnetic image of a photocolor-separated film positive of the original colored design; means for developing the magnetic image on the ferromagnetic printing means with a toner comprising a ferromagnetic component, a dye and a resin; means for transferring the developed image to the substrate, and means for neutralizing static electricity on said toner. Optionally, the apparatus may include: means for transferring the developed image from one substrate to another; means for fixing said dye on and/or in an ultimate substrate; and/or means for removing said ferromagnetic component and said resin.

Magnetic printing apparatus

A process for reproducing graphic information wherein a magnetic image is formed in a premagnetized layer of acicular chromium dioxide by heating the chromium dioxide selectively to above its Curie point. Ferromagnetic toner particles are then applied uniformly to the chromium dioxide layer, so as to adhere only in the magnetized areas. The toner particles are electrostatically transferred to a substrate and fused into position. Alternating current coronas or other static neutralizing devices are used to neutralize unwanted charges on toner particles which would otherwise cause fuzzy images and unwanted background markings on the final copies.

Magnetic printing apparatus for forming on a substrate a colored print of an original colored design, said apparatus comprising a ferromagnetic printing means which is imposed on an electrically conductive support; means for forming on the ferromagnetic printing means a magnetic image of a photocolor-separated film positive of the original colored design; means for developing the magnetic image on the ferromagnetic printing means with a toner comprising a ferromagnetic component, a dye and a resin; and means for transferring the developed image to the substrate. A process for reproducing graphic information wherein a magnetic image is formed in a premagnetized layer of acicular chromium dioxide by heating the chromium dioxide selectively to above its Curie point. Uncharged ferromagnetic toner particles are then applied uniformly to the chromium dioxide layer, but adhere only in the magnetized areas. The toner particles are then transferred electrostatically to a substrate.
