A sliding contact assembly for a DC electrical outlet receives plug contacts of an electrical plug. The assembly includes sliding contact structure having a base and a plurality of electrical sliding contacts fixed to the base. A housing includes a first end wall having an internal top surface and second end wall opposing the first end wall. The second end wall has an internal bottom surface. The housing has a side wall structure defining an internal chamber between the top surface and the bottom surface. The sliding contact structure is disposed in the housing to be movable linearly within the chamber. A spring is disposed between the top surface of the housing and a surface of the base so that when the plug contacts are completely disconnected from the associated sliding contacts, the spring rapidly forces the sliding contacts away from the plug contacts, reducing arcing energy there-between.

A GFCI circuit that includes an electronically controllable main switch that can turn on, and turn off, the delivery of electrical power from the GFCI circuit. The main switch is controlled and monitored by a microcontroller unit using at least digital input and digital output signals, and which includes analog to digital converter. The microcontroller unit may also use the on-off functionality of the main switch in connection with repeatable detection of miswiring of the GFCI circuit. The GFCI circuit can further be adapted to conduct a self-test that can temporarily disable the ability of a trip signal generated by a GFCI integrated circuit in response to a test fault to cause the tripping of the main switch. The microcontroller unit further monitors one or more characteristics of the GFCI circuit, including the main switch and trip signal(s), and can determine whether the GFCI circuit has reached its end-of-life stage.

Technologies for providing DC arc protection in a DC socket include an electromagnet positioned in the DC socket configured to produce a magnetic field. The electromagnet is positioned to be adjacent to a contact region between one or more supply terminals of a DC socket and one or more prongs of a DC plug. As the DC plug is disconnected from the DC socket, a DC arc might form between one or more of the supply terminals and one or more of the prongs. The magnetic field produced by the electromagnet reduces the energy of the DC arc and reduces the time duration of the DC arc.
