Embodiments of a flame retardant composition are provided. The composition includes from 55% to 85% by weight of a blended matrix and from 15% to 45% by weight of a flame retardant package distributed within the blended matrix. The blended matrix includes a polyolefin component and a nitrogen-containing polymer component. In particular, the nitrogen-containing polymer component has a melting temperature of less than 240&#xb0; C. The flame retardant package includes an acid source, a carbon source, a polyoxometalate ionic liquid, and a synergist. The flame retardant composition can be utilized in cables, such as fiber optic cables.

Cable component including a halogen-free flame retardant composition

An optical fiber cable comprises a cable core including at least one optical transmission element to transfer light, and a cable jacket surrounding the cable core. The cable jacket is embodied as a multilayered structure having a first sheath layer and at least a second sheath layer being surrounded by the first sheath layer. The material of the first and the second sheath layer is halogen free. The material of the first sheath layer and the material of the second sheath layer have a different flame retardant additive providing different flame retardant mechanisms.

Optical fiber cable with improved fire protection performance

An optical fiber cable includes a cable jacket, a plurality of buffer tubes arranged on the inside of the cable jacket, a plurality of optical fibers arranged on the inside of each buffer tube, and a fire-retardant material having intrinsic tire-retarding properties. The fire-retardant material may be a filling material disposed between the cable jacket and the buffer tubes.

Optical fiber cable and method of forming an optical fiber cable

An optical fiber cable includes a plurality of optical fibers and at least one tubular jacketing element surrounding the plurality of optical fibers. The jacketing element has a jacketing material containing at least a first ingredient being a thermoplastic polymer, a second ingredient being an intumescent material capable of releasing gas, under the influence of heat, for generating a foam, and a third ingredient being a stiffening agent capable of decomposing, under the influence of heat, with formation of a glass and/or of a ceramic material for stiffening the foam.

Optical fiber cable

A flame retardant optical fiber is provided. The flame retardant optical fiber includes a glass core, a cladding surrounding the glass core and a primary coating adhered to the cladding. The flame retardant optical fiber also includes a secondary coating surrounding the primary coating, wherein the secondary coating is formed from a coating composition that is substantially free of an oligomeric component and that comprises a flame retardant composition including a flame retardant material.

Flame-retardant optical fiber coating

A fire resistant optical communication cable is provided. The fire-resistant optical communication cable includes an extruded cable body including an inner surface defining a passage in the cable body and an outer surface. The fire-resistant optical communication cable includes a plurality of elongate optical transmission elements located within the passage of the cable body. The fire-resistant optical communication cable includes a layer of intumescent particles embedded in the material of the cable body forming an intumescent layer within the cable body. The cable may include one or more elements having flame resistant coatings that, upon exposure to heat, form a ceramic layer increasing the combustion time of the coated element.
