An example radio frequency (RF) positioning node system calculates a respective distance between an uncommissioned RF positioning node to each of neighboring commissioned RF positioning nodes based on a respective received signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurement. Based on the calculated respective distance to each of the neighboring commissioned RF positioning nodes and a set of commissioned location coordinates of each of the neighboring commissioned RF positioning nodes, the RF positioning node system estimates a set of uncommissioned location coordinates of the uncommissioned RF positioning node. The RF positioning node system determines a best fit assignment of the set of uncommissioned location coordinates of uncommissioned RF positioning nodes in an uncommissioned RF positioning node list to the set of commissioned location coordinates of non-operational commissioned RF positioning nodes in a non-operational RF positioning node list to adjust an RF positioning node map for each of the non-operational commissioned RF positioning nodes.

Self-healing in a luminaire or other radio frequency positioning node based system

A network has wireless enabled nodes of more than one hardware type. A computing device obtains a software update for one of the node types and sends an announcement of availability through the network. The announcement includes a node type identifier. A node that recognizes the identifier as matching its own hardware type collects the software update through a series of one or more requested packet transfers from the controller. Each packet carrying part of the update also includes the node type identifier. A node of a different type that has received the packets may serve as a source of missing packets to other nodes. Alternatively, nodes needing missing packets can fetch them from the computing device. When the software update is completely received by a node of the identified type, that node reboots and executes the updated software. Any node of another type discards the packets.

Selective updating of nodes of a nodal wireless network

In response to receiving a lighting system element request message from a gateway to detect a subset or all wireless RF floor beacons in the space, a lighting system element receives via a local wireless communication network, a respective floor beacon identification message including a detected respective wireless RF beacon identifier transmitted from a detected respective wireless RF floor beacon. The lighting system element determines a respective RF signal strength between the detected respective wireless RF floor beacon from the respective lighting system element based on the respective floor beacon identification message. The lighting system elements transmits, via the local wireless communication network, to the gateway a respective lighting system element report message including the detected respective wireless RF beacon identifier of the detected respective wireless RF floor beacon, the respective RF signal strength, and the respective lighting system element identifier.

A method for testing an emergency lighting product connected to a network includes creating, at a network control device, a first test schedule for causing the emergency lighting product to perform a test, where the test is scheduled to be performed by the emergency lighting product based on a signal received from the network control device after a first time period. The method further includes creating, at the emergency lighting product, a second test schedule for causing the emergency lighting product to perform the test after a second time period, where the second time period is longer than the first time period and begins at the same time as the first time period, and determining, by the emergency lighting product after the second time period, that the signal has not been received from the network control device, and performing, by the emergency lighting product, the test.

An example luminaire-based positioning system calculates a respective distance between an uncommissioned luminaire to each of neighboring commissioned luminaires based on a respective received signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurement. Based on the calculated respective distance to each of the neighboring commissioned luminaires and a set of commissioned location coordinates of each of the neighboring commissioned luminaires, luminaire-based positioning system estimates a set of uncommissioned location coordinates of the uncommissioned luminaire. The luminaire-based positioning system determines a best fit assignment of the set of uncommissioned location coordinates of uncommissioned luminaires in an uncommissioned luminaire list to the set of commissioned location coordinates of non-operational commissioned luminaires in a non-operational luminaire list. The luminaire-based positioning system adjusts a luminaire node map for each of the non-operational commissioned luminaires based on the determined best fit assignment.

Examples of a system and a method for asset tracking are provided. The system includes wireless communication nodes in a space that receive a basic message including an asset tracking tag identifier and a basic message sequence number transmitted by an asset tracking tag. The wireless communication nodes measure a received basic message signal attribute, and transmit a node asset message including the asset tracking tag identifier, the basic message sequence number, a node identifier, and the measured signal attribute of the received basic message to an edge gateway. The edge gateway may receive the transmitted node asset message transmitted by each of some number of the wireless communication nodes and rank respective node identifiers extracted from the received node asset messages based the measured signal attribute. The edge gateway forwards an aggregated message to a fog gateway for obtaining an estimate of the location of the asset tracking tag.

Asset tag tracking system and network architecture

A system includes a plurality of lighting devices connected in a network to communicate in a service area, and a smart tag configured to communicate with one or more of the lighting devices. Each respective lighting device is configured to transmit a radio frequency signal including a device identifier of the respective lighting device. In response to expiration of a time period or an occurrence of an event, the smart tag is configured to transition from a low power consumption sleep mode to an awake mode. During the awake mode, the smart tag is configured to provide information that enables a processor or other computing device to determine a position of the smart tag or any asset associated with the smart tag in the service area. Upon transmission of the information, the smart tag is transitioned from the awake mode back to the low power consumption sleep mode.

Asset tracking using active wireless tags that report via a local network of connected beacons

An example of a technique for maintaining a previously calibrated mobile device positioning system to account for changes in perturbers of the Earth's magnetic field. A mobile device obtains a corrected heading estimate of the mobile device within a space based on a previously recorded heading correction value. The mobile device also calculates a device heading relative to a previously orientated map of the space. The mobile device subsequently updates the heading correction value with any deviation between the corrected heading estimate and the calculated device heading.

System and method for estimating the position and orientation of a mobile communications device in a beacon-based positioning system

The disclosure provides an example of a system including a radio frequency (RF) nodal network and a gateway coupled to the RF nodal network. The gateway is configured to transmit control packets the control packets having an initial parameter setting for each node in the RF nodal network. The selected nodes among the network of nodes are configured to transmit a number of test packets for each of a plurality of tests is greater than throughput saturation of the RF nodal network. The system includes a server coupled to the gateway and is configured to perform network performance analysis based on the test packets for each of the plurality of tests received by the gateway. The server updates parameter settings to optimize performance of the nodes of the RF nodal network to attain the target network performance metric based on a result of the network performance analysis.

Heuristic optimization of performance of a radio frequency nodal network

Radio frequency-enabled nodes, in an example asset tracking system, receive a basic message including an asset tracking tag identifier from an asset tag. The nodes measure a signal attribute of the received message; and each receiving node transmits a node asset message including the asset tag identifier, a respective node identifier, and the measured signal attribute. Edge gateways each receive one or more node asset messages transmitted by some number of the radio frequency-enabled nodes and rank respective node identifiers based on the measured signal attribute. Each edge gateway forwards an aggregated message to a fog gateway, which parses data from the aggregated messages to form a node identifier tuple identifying at least three nodes near the asset tag. Ordered identifiers from the tuple and known locations of the identified nearby nodes can then be processed to estimate of the location of the asset tag.

Network architecture, radio frequency based asset tracking and/or location estimation methods and systems

A tag is configured to provide information that enables a processor or other computing device to locate the tag and any asset associated with the tag in an area. The tag incorporates a motion sensor responsive to movements of the tag above a predetermined rate and a predetermined magnitude. In response to the movements above the predetermined rate and magnitude, the motion sensor generates a voltage exceeding a predetermined threshold. An energy-saving process exploits the tag's microcontroller's transitions between a 'sleep' state and an 'awake' state. While asleep, the microcontroller maintains a clock and data in memory, and monitors an input from the motion sensor. In response to voltages at the input over the predetermine threshold, the microcontroller receives signals from one or more nearby beacon nodes in a network operating in the area, process the signals and transmit information based on the processed signals, for a position determination.

A lighting system includes lighting devices and an update manager. The lighting devices include various hardware versions and/or functionalities. The lighting devices are queried to determine existing hardware versions and/or functionalities. The query is sent via a wireless mesh network of the lighting system. An Over-The-Air (OTA) update includes multiple different lighting device programming images, where each image corresponds to one of the existing hardware versions and/or functionalities. The OTA update is delivered via point-to-point connections between the update manager and some number of lighting devices and/or between the lighting devices. Upon receipt, individual lighting devices determine whether a lighting device programming image is needed and/or which of the lighting device programming images is appropriate.

A light source emits a modulated light, and a radio-frequency transceiver disposed therewith emits a radio-frequency signal. A mobile device may receive either or both signals and determine its position based thereon. The light and radio-frequency sources may be disposed in node in a network of said sources, and the nodes may communicate via the radio-frequency transceivers.

System and method for communication with a mobile device via a positioning system including RF communication devices and modulated beacon light sources

A lighting system includes lighting devices and a controller. An Over-The-Air (OTA) update of lighting device programming is delivered via point-to-point connections between the controller and some number of lighting devices and/or between the lighting devices. Delivery of the OTA update from one lighting device to another lighting device is triggered based on an update command sent via a wireless mesh network of the lighting system.
