An acoustical horn is disclosed which is configured to re-direct spherical acoustic wave fronts radiated from a transducer with a minimum amount of distortion. The acoustical horn includes top and bottom portion which are asymmetrically-shaped with respect to each other.

The present invention relates to a modular loudspeaker, primarily intended to be used as a studio monitor and comprising a broadband module for radiating a first frequency range with a lower limiting frequency sufficiently low to provide a fully acceptable reproduction in many situations and furthermore provided with a high frequency radiating unit (and possibly also a mid frequency radiating unit), the directional characteristics of which relative to the cabinet of the module can be controlled. The modular loudspeaker according to the invention furthermore comprises one or more low frequency module(s) for radiating a second frequency range which may at least partially overlap said first frequency range for either increasing the acoustical output at the lower end of the frequency range radiated by the broadband module or for extending the lower limiting frequency of the complete modular loudspeaker below the lower limiting frequency of the broadband module. The modular loudspeaker according to the invention is furthermore provided with means for transmission of information about the presence&#x2014;and number&#x2014;of low frequency modules applied in order to automatically change appropriate signal processing parameters in order to obtain a given target response of the complete modular loudspeaker.

An apparatus for the redistribution of acoustic energy is provided which comprises a lens having a reflective surface defined by the surface of revolution R1 of an elliptical arc A1 rotated about a line L through an angle .alpha.1 and the surface of revolution R2 of an elliptical arc A2 rotated about the line L through an angle .alpha.2. Each elliptical arc A1 and A2 constitutes a portion of an ellipse E1 or E2 having a focal point located at a point F1 on line L, and shares an end point P which lies on the reflective surface and the line L. The angle .alpha.1 is chosen such that the surface of revolution R1 is convex with respect to an adjoining surface S1 and the angle .alpha.2 is chosen such that the surface of revolution R2 is concave with respect to the adjoining surface S1.

Apparatus for the redistribution of acoustic energy

An acoustic reflector is disclosed, which is formed from the surface generated by an ellipse rotated about 180.degree. about a line passing through one of the focal points of the ellipse, where this line of rotation intersects the major axis at an acute angle. A transducer placed at the focal point on the line of revolution will, when energized, generate waves that will be reflected from the surface back through the arc of second focal points of the generating ellipse.
