A throttle valve includes a one-piece valve body defining a transverse flow passage and an actuation device cavity. The throttle valve includes a valve assembly having a shaft which extends through the flow passage and which is mounted to the valve body via a pair of aligned passages formed in the walls of the valve body defining the flow passage. One of the aligned passages establishes communication with the actuation device so as to enable the valve shaft to be assembled to the valve body through the actuation device cavity. A pole carrier is mounted to the valve shaft and a pair of pole members are secured to the pole carrier. An electromagnetic actuation device is mounted within the actuation device cavity and is operable on the pole members in a contactless manner to impart rotation to the valve shaft through the pole members and the pole carrier upon energization of a coil assembly associated with theelectromagnetic actuation device. A portion of the valve shaft extends from the valve body opposite the actuation device cavity, and a stop arrangement and sensor arrangement are interconnected with the valve shaft. The stop arrangement preferably includes stop structure formed integrally with the valve body and a stop member secured to the valve shaft. The sensor arrangement is a contactless assembly which includes a Hall-effect sensor assembly having a stationary portion mounted to the valve body and a rotatable portion engaged with the valve shaft so as to detect the position of the valve assembly relative to the valve body. Inputs from the sensor arrangement are provided to a controller, which is operable to control the position of the valve member by controlling the energization of the electromagentic actuation device, to thereby control the position of the valve member. The invention contemplates a number of improvements in the overall construction of the valve assembly and its components, as well as in the method by which the throttle valve is assembled. The valve shaft assembly is driven, and its position is sensed, in a contactless manner so as to reduce friction and provide increased life.

Integrated throttle valve and actuator

An electromagnetic actuator includes a frusto-conical projection having a central opening formed therein. A winding is contained in a housing surrounding the projection which encompasses the projection. A shaft extends through a central opening in the projection and carries an armature having a reciprocally configured frusto-conical surface. Excitation of the winding causes linear movement of the shaft on bearings contained within the housing.

Linear electromagnetic actuator

A rotor is provided for use in combination with a stator and sleeve to function as a valve attached to an actuator. The rotor is comprised of a rotor body containing the drive section with the necessary elements to turn the rotor within the stator and sleeve, and a rotor stem with parts to act with complementary parts on the sleeve to form variable orifices that function as the valve. The rotor body is connected to the rotor stem by a flexible joint which includes a contoured surface to compensate for misalignments in the system.

Flexible valve

A rotary electrically actuated device is provided for controlling fluid flow and includes a stator member having a base section, a post, and symmetrically arranged extensions which coact to form a cavity in which a coil is disposed. A rotor is supportingly mounted on the distal end of the post and is adapted to rotate within a predetermined sector. The rotor has a first section extending partially into the cavity and is provided with circumferentially-spaced magnetic pole elements having corresponding curved endfaces conforming substantially to curved interior surfaces of the extensions. Each endface has a surface configuration having a side portion narrower than the opposite side portion. The rotor is biased to normally assume a position within the sector wherein only the narrow side portions of the endfaces are disposed adjacent to the extension interior surfaces and the remainder of the endfaces are out of registration with said interior surfaces. The rotor moves to a second position within the sector wherein the endfaces substantially register with the extension interior surfaces, when the coil is electrically energized. A second section projects axially from the rotor first section.

Rotary electrically actuated device

An automatic control system wherein repetitive pulses, the frequency of which is responsive to a remote condition such as prime mover RPM, are converted to a D.C. voltage level which is then compared to a reference to produce an error signal. Three further signals are then produced, one proportional to the error signal, one proportional to its integral and the other proportional to its derivative. The three further signals are summed and amplified to the extent necessary and the resultant used to control an element which in turn controls the remote condition. Included is a fail safe circuit effective to cause the remote condition controlling element to shut off in the event incoming pulses are not present. Provision is made whereby the system may respond to the summed signals described above or an external signal which may be derived from a function generator or a limiting value established by an external condition. A particular application described for the system is its use as a governor system for prime movers such as internal combustion engines and steam turbines.
