An electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) is provided with an integrated arc fault detection circuit interruption (AFCI) device to supply electricity to an electric vehicle (EV) being a load. The EVSE comprises a coupler and an AFCI device including: a controller including a processor and a memory, circuitry and computer-readable firmware code stored in the memory which, when executed by the processor, causes the controller to: detect an arcing level of arcing between the coupler and a charge port of the EV or any other series or parallel arcing within the EVSE, compare the arcing level to a threshold level to determine a hazardous nature of arching, and analyze the arcing level to determine not only if it is currently hazardous but if it is likely to become hazardous in a near term and recommend repair or replacement of the coupler and the charge port before damage occurs.

Standalone or networked electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) to detect and stop arcing before it becomes dangerous

An apparatus and method for thermally compensating a voltage signal for a circuit protection device. The circuit protection device is coupled to a powered circuit and having current flowing through it. A bus carries the power therethrough. A sense resistor is electrically coupled to a bus for sensing the current flowing through the bus. A temperature sensitive circuit is coupled to the sense resistor for compensating ambient temperatures. The invention is useful for providing an accurate sense resistor that supplies a temperature independent current in a power line and the related voltage output of the sense resistor at varying ambient temperatures.

AFCI temperature compensated current sensor

A sputtering arc fault detector ( ) for a system having an electrical conductor ( ) carrying current to a load. The sputtering arc fault detector includes a current monitor ( ) coupled to the conductor for generating a variable signal responsive to behavior of the current in the conductor. A level detector ( ) is coupled to the monitor and generates a first pulse when the variable signal exceeds a first level. A step detector ( ) is coupled to the monitor and is responsive to rapid step increases of the variable signal. The step detector generates a second pulse when the variable signal exceeds a second level. An arc verifier ( ), which is coupled to the level detector and the step detector, combines the first and second pulses, and generates a fault signal when the combined pulses exceed a third level.

Arc fault detector method

A sputtering arc fault detector (10) for a system having an electrical conductor (14) carrying current to a load. The sputtering arc fault detector includes a current monitor (64) coupled to the conductor for generating a variable signal responsive to behavior of the current in the conductor. A level detector (58) is coupled to the monitor and generates a first pulse when the variable signal exceeds a first level. A step detector (62) is coupled to the monitor and is responsive to rapid step increases of the variable signal. The step detector generates a second pulse when the variable signal exceeds a second level. An arc verifier (48), which is coupled to the level detector and the step detector, combines the first and second pulses, and generates a fault signal when the combined pulses exceed a third level.

Arc fault detector apparatus, means and system

A ground fault interruption circuit has a detector circuit coupled to an electrical distribution circuit load to detect ground fault conditions in the load. A filtering circuit connected between the detector circuit and distribution network comprises a pi-network filter for attenuating common-mode electromagnetic interference and differential-mode electromagnetic interference. The pi-network filter includes three filter portions which together provide a third order filter to attenuate the interference signals at the frequencies of interest.
