A stabilized nano-Fe-iron-crown ether complex is added to a heavy oil to reduce the viscosity of the heavy oil. The complex may be formed by preparing a solution of an iron salt and an oligomer crown compound in dialkylamine or diethylamine. Sodium tetrahydroboron (NaBH) and dialkylamine or ethylendiamine are added at a temperature of 0-10&#xb0; C. The mixture is heated to room temperature and boiled, thereby converting the formed iron (II)-borhydride complex (Fe(BH)) to a crown ether&#x2014;iron-hydride complex [CWFe].(2H). At higher temperature this last complex is converted to the Fe-crown nanocomposite complex. The prepared nanoparticle Fe&#xb0; complex may be stabilized by inclusion into a cavity of a macrocyclic compound, and may be (1) added to diesel fuel to reduce NOx emissions upon combustion of that fuel; (2) added to lubricating oils as an anticorrosion additive; and (3) used as an additive to secondary recovery processes within liquid hydrocarbon formations to increase the sweep efficiency and recovery factor of water-flooding operations.

Method of preparing a nanoparticulate iron&#x2014;crown ether complex

A catalytic process for producing ketones and particularly methyl-benzyl-ketone is provided. A catalyst comprising thorium oxide and a second metal oxide, preferably MnO, is formed on a substrate, preferably pumice. Phenylacetic acid and acetic acid are reacted in the presence of the catalyst to form methyl-benzyl-ketone.

Method of preparation of methyl-benzyl-ketone

A process for producing phenylacetic acid is provided. The process includes combining sodium, chlorobenzene, toluene, and a catalyst to form a suspension. This suspension is mixed to form phenylsodium. Upon boiling, the suspension forms benzylsodium. The suspension is then carbonized and acidified to form phenylacetic acid.

A method for producing ferrocene and other organometallic compounds of cyclopentadiene is disclosed. Dry iron chloride (or other selected metal salt) is added to a solution of cyclopentadiene, diethylamine, potassium and dibenzo-18-crown-6 ether in a cooled flask under a dry nitrogen atmosphere. The solution is mixed vigorously for a few hours and any excess diethylamine is evaporated. Ferrocene (or other organometallic compounds of cyclopentadiene) is extracted from the residue using petroleum ether, and any solvent is removed.
