Apparatus and method for installing tracer material in downhole screens

A well fluid particle screen assembly includes a base pipe having first and second pipe segments. First and second sets of perforations are located in sidewalls of the first and second pipe segments. First and second screens are mounted around the first and second pipe segments. A second pipe segment valve mounted to the second pipe segment has a closed position blocking well fluid flow through the second set of perforations. The second pipe segment valve has a pressure area acted on by a well fluid pressure differential. When reaching a threshold, the pressure differential causes the second pipe segment valve to move from the closed position to an open position. A retainer retains the second pipe segment valve in the closed position until the threshold is reached.

A method of opening an orifice in a downhole article includes forming a downhole article having an orifice, the orifice having a selectively removable plug sealingly disposed therein, the selectively removable plug comprising a selectively removable plug body formed of a plug body material and a selectively removable sealant coating formed of a coating material disposed on an outer surface of the plug body. The method also includes disposing the article within a wellbore. The method further includes exposing the selectively removable plug to a first wellbore fluid that is configured to selectively remove the sealant coating and provide a fluid access to the plug body. The method further includes exposing the selectively removable plug body to a second wellbore fluid through the fluid access that is configured to selectively remove the plug body and using the second wellbore fluid to break the sealant coating into a plurality of pieces.

An assembly of screens made of connected joints with exterior bypasses that span the threaded connections among the joints features common fluid connections for the bypasses adjacent joint threaded ends that are connected with a coupling. A mandrel spans from one joint to the next inside the threaded coupling and is sealed to the respective bases pipes on opposed ends of the coupling. At each end of the mandrel the surrounding base pipe has openings from the common fluid connection where the bypasses terminate to define an annular flow path between pairs of common fluid connections. The bypasses can have slanted gravel outlet passages or no gravel openings at all. The bypasses can span over screen or blank pipe with an option to mount a shroud over the generally parallel bypasses.

A flow control device is provided that in one embodiment includes a flow-through region configured to receive formation fluid at an inflow region and discharge the received fluid at an outflow region and a setting device configured to adjust the flow of the fluid through the flow-through region to a selected level. The setting device includes a coupling member configured to be coupled to an external latching device adapted to move the coupling member to cause the setting device to alter the flow of the fluid from the flow-through region to the selected level.

A method of producing fluids from a wellbore that has therein n adjustable flow control device for controlling flow of fluid between a formation and the wellbore may include: providing a tool having a sensor configured to provide measurements relating to a downhole property of interest, wherein the tool is configured to adjust flow from the flow control device; conveying the tool into the wellbore; determining the property of interest using the tool; and adjusting the flow through the flow control device with the tool at least in part in response to the determined parameter of interest. An apparatus for controlling fluid flow between a formation and a wellbore, according to one embodiment may include: a tool configured to be conveyed into a wellbore that contains at least one sensor for estimating a property of interest downhole and a latching device configured to couple to a flow control device in the wellbore to alter flow of the fluid through the flow control device.

Wireline-adjustable downhole flow control devices and methods for using same

A method of making a screen for downhole use uses mesh screen layers that are diffusion bonded to each other. The ends that will overlap to make a seam when the sheets that are attached together are rolled into a tube are compressed before the tube shape is created or thereafter when the tube shape and an inner base pipe are drawn through a die to join the seam made by the overlapping edges. Because of the compression of the edges, when they overlap to form a tube the wall thickness at the overlap is about the same as the remaining thickness of the screen portion. Optionally, a resilient material can be compressed into the open areas of the screen portions that will be overlapped to make the generally longitudinally oriented seam. The seam can be parallel to the screen axis or spiral around it. The outer perforated shroud provides a compressive force that maintains a barrier resistant to flow of sand particles between the seam overlapping surfaces as the outer perforated shroud, filtration tube and inner base pipe assembly is drawn through a die.
