This invention relates to a process of exploding tobacco stems to improve smoke quality, and more particularly to a process of exploding the cells of tobacco stems with high pressure saturated steam, followed by rapid depressurization and quenching, in order to reduce negative contributors to smoke quality and to form favorable flavor compounds.

Process for steam explosion of tobacco stem

A process for the manufacture of a reconstituted tobacco product wherein the process comprises extraction of tobacco furnish with an aqueous solvent in the presence of at least one ammonium salt or urea or a urea derivative or a mixture of urea or a urea derivative and at least one ammonium salt to provide an aqueous solvent extract and a fibrous material and forming the fibrous material into a sheet-like product using the papermaking process. The aqueous extract is then applied to the formed sheet-like material and further processing provides a reconstituted tobacco product having improved smoke quality.

Reconstituted tobacco product

A smoking device includes a tobacco column having a wrapper and either a mouthpiece or filter rod located coaxially at one end of the tobacco column. A rigid tube is concentrically located in the tobacco column. A substrate of porous material is located within the tube. A flavor releasing material and an aerosol generating material are also disposed within the tube. A smoke impermeable seal is located at the interface of the tobacco column and the mouthpiece/filter.

A tobacco treating process for forming favorable flavor compounds in a moisturized tobacco including the steps of contacting the tobacco with citrus pectin, invert sugar, or diammonium phosphate, or a combination resulting in a tobacco having a pectin level and diammonium phosphate level of predetermined percentages, thereof, introducing the moistened tobacco into a containing zone; introducing an ammonia source into the containing zone; heating the contained zone when substantially closed to bring the tobacco to a preselected temperature to improve flavor compounds through reaction of the ammonia source, citrus pectin, and reducing sugars, and/or other tobacco components; and cooling and removing the tobacco from the closed zone.

Process for forming flavor compounds in tobacco

A tobacco treating process for forming favorable flavor compounds in a moisturized tobacco including the steps of introducing the moistened tobacco into a containing zone; introducing an ammonia source into the containing zone; heating the contained zone when substantially closed to bring the tobacco to a preselected temperature to improve flavor compounds through reaction of the ammonia source and reducing sugars, and/or other tobacco components; and cooling and removing the tobacco from the closed zone.

A method of treating tobacco with a strong acid to inhibit alkaloid loss during drying. The tobacco is then treated with weak base to neutralize the acid. The preferred strong acid is phosphoric. The preferred weak base is ammonium hydroxide. An added benefit of this treatment is burn retardation by ammonium phosphates resulting in cigarette puff number increase.

An improved tobacco treating process for smoking articles including the steps of applying an ammonia source to tobacco to be dryed, passing the ammonia treated tobacco in a restricted pressure and flow controllable system to be entrained by pressurized steam for a preselected residence time before disentrainment therefrom, the steam being held at preselected minimum pressure and velocity to improve flavor quality and fill value of the tobacco.

Process for treating, drying and expanding tobacco

A smoking article, such as a cigarette, includes an air impermeable generally cylindrically shaped plug located in coaxial abutment to one end of the tobacco column of the cigarette and a generally cylindrically shaped filter rod located in coaxial abutment with the plug. The plug is formed with a plurality of grooves in its peripheral surface extending generally longitudinally of the plug from one end to the other end thereof. Air permeable tipping material circumferentially surrounds the impermeable plug and the filter rod, and overlaps a portion of the tobacco column adjacent to plug to fasten the plug and filter rod to the tobacco column.

Filtered cigarette

The disclosure is of compositions useful for chemisorption of undesirable chemical compounds found in tobacco smoke. The compositions comprise a base of alumina (aluminum oxide) impregnated with various proportions of zinc acetate, acetic acid and polyethyleneimine. The compositions are usefully employed as chemical filter components and are particularly advantageous in that they have a capacity to remove large quantities of hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen sulfide from tobacco smoke while simultaneously removing acetaldehyde. Unexpectedly the smoking quality of cigarettes, to which the compositions may be associated, is not adversely affected. To the contrary, smoking quality of such cigarettes is improved.
