A pollution-free process for forming trialkyl phosphite by reaction of phosphorus trichloride with alcohol in the presence of a tertiary amine acid acceptor is described in which by-product hydrochloride salt of the acid acceptor is electrolyzed to regenerate the tertiary amine for recycle for further use in reacting additional phosphorus trichloride with alcohol to form additional trialkyl phosphite product.

Pollution-free process for making trialkyl phosphites

Ferric chloride contained in liquid waste streams comprising higher boiling chlorinated hydrocarbons may be substantially reduced by contacting the waste stream with an amount of water sufficient to convert a substantial amount of the ferric chloride in said stream to solid ferric chloride hexahydrate, and then removing the solid hexahydrate from the waste stream for instance by filtration.

Process for treating liquid chlorinated hydrocarbon wastes containing

Iron, such as ferric chloride, and other metallic impurities, contained in liquid chlorinated hydrocarbon waste streams, is removed by treatment of such streams with dilute aqueous mineral acid.

Oxychlorination of ethylene is carried out using a three-reactor system containing beds of a catalyst comprising a spherical, high-surface area activated alumina impregnated with cupric chloride and potassium chloride. In the first two reactors, the catalyst bed is divided into two sections, with a more active catalyst in the lower section than in the upper. The catalyst is substantially undiluted with inert particles. A new catalyst for such a process is also provided.
