Embodiments herein provide formulations and methods for treatment of inflammatory skin diseases using allantoin in an amount from about 0.5% to about 15.0% by weight. Inflammatory skin diseases treated by embodiments herein include, without limitation, cutaneous porphyria, sclerodema, epidermolysis bulosa, psoriasis, decubitus ulcers, pressure ulcers, diabetic ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, sickle cell ulcers, ulcers caused by burns, eczema, urticaria, atopic dermatitis, dermatitis herpetiform, contact dermatitis, arthritis, gout, lupus erythematosus, acne, alopecia, carcinomas, psoriasis, rosacea, miliaria, skin infections, post-operative care of incisions, post-operative skin care following any variety of plastic surgery operations, skin care following radiation treatment, care of dry, cracked or aged skin and skin lines as well as other conditions affecting the skin and having an inflammatory component, symptoms thereof, or a combination thereof. Symptoms treated may include pain, inflammation, redness, itching, scarring, skin thickening, milia, or a combination thereof.

Methods of treating psoriasis using allantoin

An allantoin-containing skin cream composition can comprise allantoin and at least one anionic or nonionic emulsifier that is substantially hydrophilic and is soluble in water. The composition is in the form of an oil-in-water emulsion. The pH of the composition is in a range of from about 3.0 to about 6.0; preferably, the pH of the composition is from about 5.0 to about 6.0. The composition can further comprise an acidic anionic polymer. A preferred acidic anionic polymer is a carboxypolymethylene polymer. The composition can further comprise a carbohydrate polymer such as galactoarabinan, polygalactose or polyarabinose. The composition can additionally comprise other ingredients such as herbal extracts, an antioxidant component, an emollient component, a chelator, a solvent component, or a preservative component. The composition is useful as a skin protectant.

Allantoin-containing skin cream

A flexible applicator for applying an oil-in-water emulsion comprises: (1) an allantoin-containing oil-in-water emulsion; and (2) a flexible element that adsorbs or absorbs the emulsion such that the emulsion is applied to the skin of a patient on whom the flexible applicator is placed. The allantoin-containing emulsion, containing allantoin and an emulsifier, has improved stability coming from the adjustment of the pH to a range of 3.0 to 6.0; preferably, the pH is in the range of 4.5 to about 5.8. The lower pH preserves the stability of the allantoin and the functionality of the emulsifier system is maintained. The emulsifier system can be a nonionic emulsifier or an anionic emulsifier plus beeswax. The acid used to adjust the pH can be an organic acid or an inorganic acid. The emulsion can further comprise other ingredients such as herbal extracts, chelating agents, preservatives, emollients, solvents, and fragrance. The flexible element can be in the form of a bandage or wipe, and can be formed of a material such as cotton, cellulose, nylon, rayon, a non-woven fabric, or a plastic polymer.

Flexible applicator for applying oil-in-water emulsion with improved stability

An allantoin-containing skin cream composition can comprise allantoin and at least one anionic or nonionic emulsifier that is substantially hydrophilic and is soluble in water. An improved method of treating skin diseases comprises applying to the skin of a patient suffering such a skin disease an allantoin-containing composition in a therapeutically effective quantity. The allantoin-containing composition is a water-in-oil emulsion that includes allantoin and an emulsifier system that includes at least one emulsifier that is either an anionic emulsifier or a nonionic emulsifier. If the emulsifier is an anionic emulsifier, the emulsifier system can include beeswax. The nonionic emulsifiers used can include at least one nonionic emulsifier that is an ethoxylated ether or an ethoxylated ester whose carbon chain length ranges from 8 to 22 carbon atoms. Alternatively, the emulsifier system can include an acidic anionic polymer such as carboxypolymethylene and an anionic emulsifier. In another alternative, the emulsifier system can include the acidic anionic polymer and a nonionic emulsifier, or the acidic anionic polymer alone. In still another alternative, the emulsifier system can include cetyl alcohol and stearic acid. In yet another alternative, the emulsifier system can include sodium stearoyl lactylate and sodium isostearoyl lactylate. In another alternative, the emulsifier system can include at least one polyethyleneglycol ether of cetearyl alcohol. In still another alternative, the emulsifier system can include a polyethylene glycol ester of stearic acid and glyceryl stearate. The composition can include other ingredients. The pH of the composition used in a method according to the present invention is from about 3.0 to about 6.0; preferably, a narrower pH range is used, varying with each embodiment of the composition. Among the diseases that can be treated is epidermolysis bullosa.

Oil-in-water emulsion with improved stability

Thermally stable collagen gels formed by the addition of small amounts of neutralized slightly cross-linked polyacrylic acid. Thermally stable gels resulting from 0.3 to 4.0 percent by weight of collagen and 0.10 to 0.50 percent by weight of neutralized slightly cross-linked polyacrylic acid. The thermally stable gels are useful in wound care management. Further, synergistic effects are noted by the addition of 0.5 to 3.0 percent by weight of natural gums, particularly those containing glucuronic acid segments. Gelatin, a partially hydrolyzed collagen, behaves in a similar manner to collagen.
