A situation awareness system is provided and includes sensors configured to sense an object and generate signals of the sensed object. An identification and classification module is in communication with the sensors. The identification and classification module is configured to identify the sensed object and determine the position, speed and direction of each sensed object. A sound synthesis module is in communication with the identification and classification module. The sound synthesis module is configured to create sounds for the sensed object and further configured to create a binaural virtual acoustic model for the sensed object. The binaural virtual acoustic model is used to position the sensed object in virtual space at a location corresponding to its location in real space. One or more beam forming arrays is in communication with the sound synthesis module and configured to delivery sound. The delivered sound increases the situational awareness of a vehicle operator.

Apparatus and method to provide situational awareness using positional sensors and virtual acoustic modeling

A crosstalk cancellation filter set configured for use in delivering binaural signals to human ears is provided. The crosstalk cancellation filter set includes a pressure matching system configured to perform spatial filtering or sound field control and an obstructed field model in communication with the pressure matching system. The crosstalk cancellation filter set is configured to take acoustic advantage of scattering effects and occlusional effects caused by violations to a free-field assumption, thereby delivering improved crosstalk cancellation acoustic displays to a listener without the use of headphones.

Optimal crosstalk cancellation filter sets generated by using an obstructed field model and methods of use

A method for acoustic beamforming filter generation may be provided. Applying eigen decomposition to generate a matrix of eigenvectors and a matrix of eigenvalues to solve a pseudoinverse of a matrix of transfer functions. Substituting any eigenvalues in the matrix of eigenvalues that are less than a value of a gain control parameter with the value of the gain control parameter to form a revised matrix of eigenvalues. A matrix of spatial filter coefficients to apply to a sound signal received at least at the first speaker and at the second speaker may be calculated based on the matrix of eigenvectors, the revised matrix of eigenvalues, and a matrix of desired frequency responses.
