An internal combustion engine includes a piston, a crankshaft having a journal, and a connecting rod. The connecting rod includes a first end coupled to the piston and a second end coupled to the journal of the crankshaft. The second end of the connecting rod includes a bearing surface configured to interface with the journal, and further includes an open portion extending through the second end from the bearing surface to the exterior of the second end.

A cap assembly includes a body and a tether. The body is configured to be fastened to a container for closing an opening in the container. An aperture is formed in the body, and the tether has a fastener, where a portion of the fastener extends through the aperture in the body. A gap is formed between the portion of the fastener and the body that allows for venting of vapors from the container around the portion of the fastener that is extending through the aperture.

An exhaust deflector is attachable to a muffler. The exhaust deflector includes a housing having a flange that is attachable to the muffler, and an outer wall extending from the flange. The outer wall defines an aperture. A single piece mesh is in contact with the flange and cooperates with the housing to define a space. A low-density material is disposed within the space.

An exhaust deflector is attachable to a muffler. The exhaust deflector includes a single-piece housing having a flange that defines an inlet aperture, an outlet wall that defines an outlet aperture, and an intermediate wall that interconnects the flange and the outlet wall. A mesh is in contact with the flange and is positioned to cover the inlet aperture. A perforated member is sandwiched between the mesh and the intermediate wall such that the perforated member and the intermediate wall cooperate to define a space. A low-density material is disposed within the space.

The present invention provides a four-stroke internal combustion engine having reduced noise emissions. The engine includes a filter element having substantially flat inlet and outlet sides, a first housing portion, and a second housing portion coupled to the first housing portion. The first and second housing portions define an air chamber in which the filter element is supported. The second housing portion includes an interior surface, at least one protrusion to space the inlet side of the filter element from the interior surface, and an air passageway. The outlet of the air passageway is positioned adjacent the interior surface to deliver air to the air chamber between the interior surface and the inlet side of the filter element. A ratio of the volume of the air chamber to the length of the air passageway is between about 5 inand about 20 in.

A starting and stopping device for an internal combustion engine includes an energy storing device including at least one elastic member. The elastic member is loaded in response to rotation of a main shaft, and the main shaft rotates in an unloading direction in response to unloading of the elastic member. A locking mechanism selectively prevents the elastic member from unloading from a loaded state by preventing the shaft from rotating in the unloading direction. A clutch mechanism is operatively disposed between the main shaft and the locking mechanism to permit rotation of the shaft in the unloading direction when a preselected torsional threshold between the shaft and the locking mechanism is reached.
