The present invention provides a functionalized composition and resulting functionalized body or prosthesis for in vitro and in vivo use comprising at least one calcium phosphate containing phase that is functionalized with a linker group comprising at least one of an organic acid molecule, a phosphonic acid, an amine, N,N-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, and 3-maleimidopropionic acid N-hydroxysuccinimide ester, and combinations thereof, and one or more of a chemical and/or a biologically active moieties, wherein the linker group provides for a reactive location for the attachment of the chemical or biologically active moiety, or both, to the calcium phosphate containing phase, and optionally including an unmodified and/or modified calcium aluminate containing phase. Methods of manufacturing a functionalized artificial prosthesis and methods of repairing a bone, vertebrae, or tissue structures are provided.

Functionalized calcium phosphate artificial bone and joint compositions and methods of use and manufacture

Phosphorus-based coatings having a plurality of phosphate moieties, a plurality of phosphonate moieties, or both, covalently bonded to an oxide surface of an implantable substrate exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics: (a) the surface phosphorus-containing group density of the coated regions of the substrate is at least about 0.1 nmol/cm; (b) the phosphorus-based coating has a thickness of less than about 10 nm; or (c) the surface phosphorus-containing group density of the coated regions of the substrate is equal to or greater than the surface hydroxyl group density of the oxide surface of the substrate. Implantable devices embodying the coated substrates are also disclosed.

Devices with multiple surface functionality

The present invention provides a dense-coverage, adherent phosphorous-based coating on the native oxide surface of a material. Disclosed phosphorous-based coatings include phosphate and organo-phosphonate coatings. The present invention also provides further derivatization of the phosphorous-based coatings to yield dense surface coverage of chemically reactive coatings and osetoblast adhesion-promoting and proliferation-promoting coatings on the native oxide surface of a titanium material.

Enhanced bonding layers on titanium materials

A bone implant, and bone implant material, includes a calcium- and oxide-containing artificial graft material in a scaffold, to which melatonin and an optional cell adhesion peptide are absorbed or covalently linked.

Bone implant

A process for modifying a surface of a metal is provided. The process includes providing a metal surface having a metal oxide, contacting the metal oxide with an organic acid having a hydroxamic acid, a sulphonic acid, or a carboxylic acid functional group, and depositing the organic acid on the surface of the metal oxide for providing a modified metal surface. Modified metal compositions are disclosed having a metal surface or a metal alloy surface having a metal oxide, and an organic acid having a functional group that is deposited onto the surface of the metal oxide forming a self assembled monolayer, multiple monolayers, or a film of a sulphonate, a hydroxamic acid, or a carboxylate with &#x2014;COOH, &#x2014;OH and &#x2014;NHterminal tail groups on the native oxide surface of the metal or the metal alloy.

Process for depositing an organic acid on the surface of a metal composition

The present invention provides a dense-coverage, adherent phosphorous-based coating on the native oxide surface of a material. Ligand-containing coating layers on the surface of hydroxide-bearing substrates comprising transition metal atoms selected from the group consisting of Group IVB, Group VB and Group VIB of the Periodic Chart covalently bonded to the surface hydroxyls of said substrate, wherein each transition metal atom is further covalently bonded to one or more ligands of said coating layer, thereby covalently bonding said coating layer to said substrate. Disclosed ligands include inorganic phosphates and organic phosphonates.
