An embodiment includes a wound dressing comprising: a shape memory polymer (SMP) foam, including open cells, having first and second states; and a hydrogel (HG) included within the cells; wherein (a) in a first position a composite, including the SMP foam and the HG, is configured to be located proximate a hemorrhagic tissue with the SMP foam in the first state; (b) in a second position the composite is configured to be expanded to the second state against the hemorrhagic tissue when the SMP foam is plasticized at 37° C. depressing a glass transition temperature (T) of the SMP foam to below 25° C. The present disclosure provides synthetic collagen and methods of making and using synthetic collagen that include a synthetic collagen that facilitates wound closure comprising an isolated and purified triple helical backbone protein that facilitates wound closure comprising one or more alteration in a triple helical backbone protein sequence, that stabilize the isolated and purified triple helical backbone protein and does not disrupt an additional collagen ligand interaction; and one or more integrin binding motifs, wherein the isolated and purified triple helical backbone protein facilitates wound closure.

Designer collagens and use thereof

An improved polymer delivery system is described which provides polymeric microparticle compositions and porous microparticles formed therefrom. Pore size, pore architecture as well as particle size are also controllable. In some embodiments, both the polymeric microparticle compositions and porous microparticles formed therefrom encapsulate at least one substance, such as a biologic substance (one having biologic activity and/or compatible with a biologic system). The encapsulation occurs prior to polymerization. The amount of substance that is encapsulated may be controlled by the described methods. Said methods do not emply organic solvents. As such, the fabrication occurs in a solvent-free system.

Porous microparticles with high loading efficiencies

Compositions and/or structures of degradable shape memory polymers (SMPs) ranging in form from neat/unfoamed to ultra low density materials of down to 0.005 g/cc density. These materials show controllable degradation rate, actuation temperature and breadth of transitions along with high modulus and excellent shape memory behavior. A method of m ly low density foams (up to 0.005 g/cc) via use of combined chemical and physical aking extreme blowing agents, where the physical blowing agents may be a single compound or mixtures of two or more compounds, and other related methods, including of using multiple co-blowing agents of successively higher boiling points in order to achieve a large range of densities for a fixed net chemical composition. Methods of optimization of the physical properties of the foams such as porosity, cell size and distribution, cell openness etc. of these materials, to further expand their uses and improve their performance.

Ultra low density biodegradable shape memory polymer foams with tunable physical properties

A device, system and method for treatment of an opening in vascular and/or septal walls including patent foramen ovale. The device has wings/stops on either end, an axis core covered in a shape memory foam and is deliverable via a catheter to the affected opening, finally expanding into a vascular or septal opening where it is held in place by the expandable shape memory stops or wings.

Materials and methods for preparing three dimensional scaffolds are described. The materials, as improved high internal phase emulsions (HIPES), and the polymerization thereof may be suitable for injection prior to curing and when in an injectable form may be for site-directed in vivo use, curing after injection. In addition, said materials before curing may be engineered as a tissue substitution or enhancement and/or to include cell encapsulation. Said materials described herein form a monolith after curing and are biodegradable and porous after curing. Said materials are made from starting molecules using a process that does not rely on toxic solvents or monomers. Making of said materials to form the emulsion take advantage of one or more surfactants for HIPE stability. In addition, said materials cure at temperatures appropriate for use in an in vivo or in situ environment.

The present invention identified a recombinant synthetic collagen containing a triple helical backbone protein produced in a prokaryotic expression system where the protein contains at least one 'inserted' biologically active sequence(s).
