Compositions and methods for depositing improved zirconium oxide conversion coatings, as well as compositions capable of depositing an adherent zirconium oxide conversion coating on a substrate in the absence of prior cleaning are provided.

Autodeposited coatings useful for protecting metal surfaces and in production of rubber-to-metal composites are obtained by curing adducts based on epoxy resins which are adhered to the metal surface. One or more epoxy resins, such as for example, the combination of a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and a flexibilizing epoxy resin, may be prereacted to form an adduct of higher average molecular weight than the starting epoxy resins. Said adduct may then be dispersed in water, with the resulting dispersion being used in an autodeposition bath composition.

The corrosion resistance, and also often the heat resistance, of a autodeposited coating in which the organic binders are predominantly copolymers of vinylidene chloride containing at least 50% vinylidene chloride can be improved by including another type of organic resin binder in the autodeposition bath in sufficient amount to constitute at least 2 up to as much as about 40% of the total of the PVDC and the other organic resin binder. Results can be further improved by rinsing the uncured autodeposited coating with an aqueous treatment solution that has a pH between 7 and 11 and contains between 0.01 and 5% of anions derived from multifunctional organic acids, preferably anions of 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, and/or oxalic acid before drying the coating.

The adhesion and/or corrosion resistance of a autodeposited coating can be improved by rinsing the uncured coating with an aqueous treatment solution that has a pH between 7 and 11 and contains between 0.05 and 5 w/o of anions derived from multifunctional organic acids, preferably anions of 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, and/or oxalic acid. The method is particularly useful on leaf springs and other metallic objects with surfaces of high carbon and/or shot blasted steel, and is particularly useful in conjunction with an autodeposition bath containing internally stabilized poly {vinylidene chloride} latex, hydrofluoric acid, ferric fluoride, and hydrogen peroxide.
