An ink jet recording element having a support having thereon a porous image-receiving layer having: (a) particles having a mean particle size of from greater than 0.04 &mgr;m to about 5 &mgr;m; and (b) water insoluble, cationic, polymeric particles having at least about 20 mole percent of a cationic mordant moiety.

An ink jet printing method having the steps of: A) providing an ink jet printer that is responsive to digital data signals; B) loading the printer with an ink jet recording element having a support having thereon an image-receiving layer of a polymeric network formed by a chemical reaction between a wet strength polymer, amino-functionalized inorganic particles and a hydrophilic polymer other than a wet-strength polymer; C) loading the printer with an ink jet ink composition; and D) printing on the ink jet recording element using the ink jet ink in response to the digital data signals.

Ink jet printing method

An ink jet recording element having a support having thereon a porous image-receiving layer with at least 30% by weight of particles and at least 30% by weight of a binder, the particles being a mixture of a) silica gel particles having an average particle size of greater than about 9 &mgr;m in diameter; and b) silica gel particles having an average particle size of between 1 and about 8 &mgr;m in diameter; wherein the ratio of the a) silica gel particles to the b) silica gel particles is from about 0.5 to about 5.

An ink jet recording element comprising a substrate having thereon a porous image-receiving layer having a) organic particles encapsulated with an organic polymer having a Tg of less than about 100&deg; C.; and b) water-insoluble, cationic, polymeric particles.

Ink jet ink set

An ink jet printing method having the steps of: A) providing an ink jet printer that is responsive to digital data signals; B) loading the printer with ink jet recording element having a substrate having thereon a porous image-receiving layer of a) organic particles encapsulated with an organic polymer having a Tg of less than about 100 &deg; C.; and b) water-insoluble, cationic, polymeric particles; C) loading the printer with an ink jet ink composition; and D) printing on the image-receiving layer using the inkjet ink composition in response to the digital data signals.

An ink jet recording element having a substrate having thereon an image-receiving layer of a filler and coated particles of a polymeric hard core-polymeric soft shell, the Tg of the polymeric hard core material being greater than about 60&deg; C., the Tg of the polymeric soft shell material being less than about 100&deg; C., and the filler being present in the image-receiving layer in an amount of from about 50 to about 95% by weight, the substrate being paper, resin-coated paper, synthetic paper, impregnated paper, cellulose acetate or a polyester film.

Apparatus is disclosed for re-applying dye to a dye donor element of a dye transfer thermal printer. A reservoir contains a supply of dye that is thermally transferred from the reservoir to the dye donor element by diffusion of dye into the dye donor element. The reservoir has a diffusion controlled permeation membrane through which dye is delivered to the dye donor element, while inhibiting diffusion of a binder, whereby the dye diffuses between the reservoir and the dye donor element but the binder does not.

Re-application of dye to a dye donor element of thermal printers

A porous ink jet recording element having a support having thereon an image-receiving layer having: (a) inorganic particles having a primary particle size of from about 7 to about 40 nm in diameter which may be aggregated up to about 500 nm; (b) colloidal particles having a mean particle size of from about 20 to about 500 nm; (c) water-insoluble, cationic, polymeric particles having at least about 20 mole percent of a cationic mordant moiety; and (d) inorganic particles encapsulated with an organic polymer having a Tg of less than about 100&deg; C.

An ink jet recording element comprising a support having thereon a porous image-receiving layer comprising at least about 50% by weight of particles and less than about 20% by weight of a binder, the particles comprising a mixture of (a) inorganic particles having a primary particle size of from about 7 to about 40 nm in diameter which may be aggregated to provide a mean aggregate particle size of up to about 500 nm; and (b) colloidal particles having a mean particle size of from about 20 to about 500 nm; and wherein the difference between the mean aggregate particle size of the (a) inorganic particles and the mean particle size of the (b) colloidal particles is within about 10%.

An ink jet recording element having a substrate having thereon a porous image-receiving layer having a) inorganic particles encapsulated with an organic polymer having a Tg of less than about 100&deg; C.; and b) particles having a mean particle size of up to about 5 &mgr;m.
