Systems, methods and computer program products are provided for handling client requests for server application processing wherein a connection between a client and server is transferred to a servlet. A client request from a server is transferred to a servlet via a server thread. The server thread is then returned to the server, thereby leaving an open connection with the requesting client. The open client connection is then retrieved and maintained by the servlet. Upon receiving the transferred client request, the servlet processes the client request and then sends processing results directly to the client via the retrieved connection.

A technique, system, and computer program for enabling multiple virtual machines to execute on a single server, using virtual machine pooling. This will result in a more scalable network environment, increasing the processing capacity of the server and decreasing the amount of time a particular request waits before being processed. Further, the integrity of an application's data will be protected from inadvertent overwriting by another application, because each application can be running in a separate virtual machine. Garbage collection, crashes, and hangs will no longer temporarily or completely halt a server: when one virtual machine halts, others can continue executing. Multiple environments can now execute on a single server, including different versions of virtual machines, increasing the mix of servlets that can be supported. Further, debugging can now occur concurrently with normal application execution, by isolating the debugging function to a specific virtual machine.

Virtual machine pooling

A technique, system, and computer program for maintaining session information among multiple clustered computers for servlets and providing those servlets with various session services. The session services are implemented using a plug-in servlet engine. The session information is preferably maintained without using a persistent data store, to avoid performance penalties associated with storing information in persistent storage such as a database. A locking technique is implemented to prevent servlets from inadvertently overwriting each other's session object data. A registration process is preferably used, to optimize communication of configuration property changes. Non-proprietary interfaces are used, allowing for scalability, portability, and maximum industry acceptance of this solution.

Maintaining sessions in a clustered server environment

A technique, system, and computer program for using servlets to isolate the retrieval of data from the rendering of the data into a presentation format. Data retrieval logic is isolated to a data servlet, and presentation formatting is isolated to a rendering servlet. Servlet chaining is used to send the output of the data servlet to the rendering servlet. The data servlet formats its output data stream for transfer to a downstream servlet. This data stream may be formatted using a language such as the Extensible Markup Language (XML), according to a specific Document Type Definition (DTD). The rendering servlet parses this XML data stream, using a style sheet that may be written using the Extensible Style Language (XSL), and creates a HyperText Markup Language (HTML) data stream as output.
