The present invention provides stable, self-assembling, biocompatible and biodegradable hydrogel formulations, into which one or more compounds may be incorporated allowing for delayed release or controlled release of the incorporated compounds as the hydrogel is degraded in the body.

Alkyl-glycoside enhanced vaccination

This present invention provides a method and compounds for priming the incorporation of cellular glucose into an oligosaccharide in a cell comprising administering to the cell a priming amount of a membrane-permeating nontoxic glycoside having a suitable hydrophobic organic group joined by a linkage to a suitable hydrophilic saccharide, wherein the hydrophilic saccharide has a nonreducing terminal sugar residue selected from the group consisting of glucose or xylose, thereby priming the incorporation of cellular glucose onto the glycoside to form an oligosaccharide. Also disclosed are methods wherein the administration of the glycoside is sufficient to treat diabetes mellitus and glycogen storage disease.

Methods of treating diabetes mellitus and clycogen storage disease

The present invention relates to a method of increasing the absorption of a compound via the ocular, nasal, nasolacrimal or inhalation route into the circulatory system of a patient. In particular, a method comprising administering with the compound an absorption enhancer comprising a nontoxic, nonionic alkyl glycoside is provided. Additionally provided are methods of raising or lowering the blood glucose level by administering glucagon or insulin, respectively, with such absorption enhancers. Finally, compositions for raising or lowering the blood glucose level are provided.

This invention provides a method and compositions for increasing the permeability of epithelial cells to a chloride ion in a subject comprising administering a permeability enhancing amount of a composition comprising a nontoxic, nonionic surfactant having (1) a critical micelle concentration of less than about 10 mM and a hydrophile-lipophile balance number of from about 10 to 20 and (2) a suitable hydrophobic organic group joined by a linkage to a suitable hydrophilic polyol.
