This invention relates to articles of manufacture containing liquid compositions of hypohalous acid or hypohalous acid salt for deactivating allergens and preventing diseases on hard surfaces, soft surfaces and in the air. The articles of manufacture contain usage instructions with health claims. This invention also includes methods of instructing the public and promoting the use of these compositions.

Methods for deactivating allergens and preventing disease

Provided is sampling and testing device for the detection of specific molds, allergens, viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other protein containing substances. Embodiments of the device include a sampling member slideably engaged with a base that contains a lateral flow strip adapted to detect specific analytes of interest. The sampling member defines a solvent reservoir that stores an elution solvent in a fluid-tight manner before the device is used to sample and test environmental surfaces. During slideable withdrawal of the sampling member from the base, the elution solvent stored in the reservoir is automatically released to a wick assembly of the sampling member. The wick assembly includes a wick adapted to receive, distribute, and retain the elution solvent. After a user samples an environmental surface for an analyte of interest with the elution solvent wetted wick, the sampling member is returned to the base where the wick contacts the lateral flow strip contained in the base. The wick transfers at least a portion of analyte and the elution solvent to the lateral flow strip for the colorimetric detection of specific allergens, viruses, bacteria, and other protein containing substances in the sample. The colorimetric results of the test are displayed through a window in the base.

Provided is a demonstration apparatus comprising a top subassembly and a bottom subassembly. The top subassembly includes a reservoir adapted to contain a consumer product to be demonstrated. The consumer product has efficacy to produce a consumer-desired effect that is directly or indirectly observable. The bottom subassembly includes a vial containing a contaminant upon which the consumer product produces the consumer-desired effect. The top sub assembly and bottom subassembly are coupled to a reservoir seal element. Upon activation of the demonstration apparatus, the consumer product flows into the bottom subassembly and contacts the contaminant to produce the consumer-desired effect. An aerosol antimicrobial composition is provided with the following ingredients: a) an anionic polymer or prepolymer; (b) a quaternary ammonium compound, the components (a) and (b) combining to form an antimicrobially effective complex; (c) at least one water-soluble or dispersible organic solvent having a vapor pressure of at least 0.001 mm Hg at 25&deg; C., said at least one organic solvent present in a solubilizing&mdash;or dispersion&mdash;effective amount; (d) an effective amount of a propellant; and (e) the remainder, water. Further is provided a novel method of decontaminating a surface fouled with microorganisms and a dispenser for said aerosol composition. The novel composition advantageously has both disinfectancy (contact efficacy) and residual antimicrobial efficacy.

Aerosol antimicrobial compositions

The present invention provides an improved antimicrobial composition which includes at least one quaternary ammonium compound and nerolidol. The nerolidol component of the composition provides enhanced antimicrobial efficacy, even when used in small amounts. Further, the nerolidol component provides such enhanced antimicrobial efficacy that the quaternary ammonium compound may be used in reduced amounts as compared to the amounts used for antimicrobial effect in prior formulations. The enhanced antimicrobial composition of the present invention is especially useful in cleaning or disinfecting applications, such as the cleaning of hard surfaces.
