A receiver system has at least one antenna that receives a plurality of signals, including a desired signal, across a wide band of frequencies. At least one tunable filter is in signal communication with the at least one antenna, and filters the plurality of signals to produce a plurality of filtered signals. Gain control circuitry is in signal communication with the at least one tunable filter, and produces a gain adjusted version of the filtered signals. A processing unit processes received signals in a portion of the wide band to extract signal characteristics of at least one undesired signal in the portion of the wide band. The at least one tunable filter is tuned based at least in part on the signal characteristics of the at least one undesired signal to maintain the SNR of the desired signal above a threshold level at the output of the gain control circuitry.

A method and apparatus that allows off-the-shelf equipment to be installed in a wide range of physical sites having a wide range of distances between a master system unit and each of a plurality of remote units. The master system unit has an integrated active combiner/splitter. A method for estimating a size of reverse link resources provided by a base-station transceiver system (BTS), including performing respective first, second, and third measurements of first, second, and third signal strengths received at the BTS. The method also includes comparing the first measurement with the second measurement so as to determine an initial minimum signal strength, and adding at a predetermined time an aging value to the initial minimum signal strength so as to form an updated minimum signal strength. The method further includes forming a comparison between the updated minimum signal strength and the third measurement, determining from the comparison a minimum of the updated minimum signal strength and the third measurement to be a minimum received signal strength, and determining the size of the reverse link resources provided by the BTS in response to the minimum received signal strength.

Estimation of received signal strength

A method for wireless communication, including positioning a first plurality of slave transceivers within a region and positioning a second plurality of slave transceivers within the region in positions spatially separated from the positions of the first plurality of slave transceivers. The method further includes receiving at the first plurality and at the second plurality of slave transceivers a reverse radio frequency (RF) signal generated by a mobile transceiver within the region and generating respective first and second slave signals responsive thereto. The method also includes conveying the first and second slave signals separately to a base transceiver station (BTS) external to the region, and processing the first and second slave signals conveyed to the BTS so as to recover information contained in the reverse RF signal generated within the region.

Diversity coverage

A radio receiver has a low noise amplifier. The low noise amplifier is enabled. If a predicted level of interference is expected to produce an acceptable bit error rate or other signal error measurement, the low noise amplifier is set to a &ldquo;low&rdquo; linearity level. If the predicted level of interference is not expected to be acceptable, the low noise amplifier is adjusted to a &ldquo;high&rdquo; level of linearity. The level of linearity required is determined by checking one or more prediction criteria: the mobile station's current operating mode, the strength of a received signal, the strength of a signal transmitted by the mobile station, the current level of interference, an acceptable level of interference, and whether the low noise amplifier is enabled or bypassed. Each of the prediction criteria may not be weighted equally. The determination is repeated as the prediction criteria change.

Control of receiver immunity to interference by controlling linearity

A method and apparatus for performing on-going calibration of a communication system in which a master system unit is coupled to one or more remote units via a relatively long wireline. On the forward link, measurements are made of at the input to the master system unit and the output of each remote unit. On the reverse link, the input to the remote unit is and the output from the master unit is measured when there is a dominant signal applied to one of the remote units. These measurements are made for a controlled signal during an initialization process and during normal operation. A reference gain for the system is determined from the measurements made during initialization. The gain of the system during normal operation is then dynamically compared to the reference gain of the system. A control signal is generated based on the difference between the reference gain and the current gain under normal operation. The control signal is used to adjust the current gain to maintain a gain value that is within a predetermined range of the reference gain.

Method and apparatus for performing on-going gain calibrating in a communication system

Repeater apparatus for conveying a radio-frequency (RF) signal into an environment closed-off to the RF signal, including a master transceiver unit having a master port which receives the RF signal, a local oscillator (LO), which generates a LO signal at a LO frequency, and a frequency divider which divides the LO frequency of the LO signal by an integer to produce a divided LO signal. The master transceiver unit also includes a master mixer coupled to the master port and the divider which generates an intermediate-frequency (IF) signal responsive to the RF signal and the LO signal. The apparatus includes one or more slave transceiver units, each unit positioned within the environment closed-off to the RF signal and including a frequency multiplier which generates a recovered LO signal at the LO frequency by multiplying the frequency of the divided LO signal by the integer, a slave mixer coupled to the multiplier which generates a recovered RF signal responsive to the recovered LO signal and the IF signal, and a slave port coupled to the slave mixer which receives the recovered RF signal therefrom and transmits the recovered RF signal into the closed-off environment. The apparatus further includes one or more cables coupled between the master transceiver unit and the one or more slave transceiver units which convey the IF signal and the divided LO signal between the master transceiver unit and the one or more slave transceiver units.
