A powered device interface constituted of: a first and second rectifier bridge, the outputs and returns thereof in electrical communication with each other; and a selection circuit; and a classification current circuit in electrical communication with the output and return of each of the first rectifier bridge and the second rectifier bridge, and further in electrical communication with a first and second input of the first rectifier bridge, wherein the classification current circuit is arranged, responsive to a classification voltage received at one of the first rectifier bridge and the second rectifier bridge, to: in the event that the classification voltage is received at the first rectifier bridge, output a first classification current exhibiting a first magnitude; and in the event that the classification voltage is received at the second rectifier bridge, output a second classification current exhibiting a second magnitude.

Powered device interface classification apparatus and method

A reverse power feeding system for supplying power from a plurality of first devices to a second device, a first set of the plurality of first devices each being powered by a first type power source and a second set of the plurality of first devices each being powered by a second type power source different than the first type power source, the system constituted of: a plurality of power paths, each of the plurality of power paths arranged to transfer DC power between a respective one of the plurality of first devices and the second device; and a control circuitry, the control circuitry arranged to adjust the amount of power supplied by each of the second set of the plurality of first devices over the power paths responsive to the total amount of power supplied by the first set of the plurality of first devices over the power paths.

A powered device interface arranged as an interface between power received over a structured communication cabling and a powered device, the powered device interface constituted of: a class event counter; a logic circuit in communication with the class event counter; and a plurality of flag outputs each responsive to the logic circuit, each of the flag outputs associated with a predetermined powering level of a power sourcing equipment connected over the structured communication cabling, the logic circuit arranged to: output an active signal at the flag output associated with a detected powering level of the connected power sourcing equipment; and output an active signal at all other flag outputs associated with powering levels less than the detected powering level of the connected power sourcing equipment.

Power device interface arranged to detect amount of power available

A circuit is provided. The circuit includes a control circuit, a voltage sensor coupled to the control circuit, and an indicator signal coupled to the control circuit. The control circuit, responsive to the voltage sensor, is configured to detect a first classification voltage within a classification voltage range defined by a lower classification voltage limit and upper classification voltage limit, detect, after detecting the first classification voltage, an indexing voltage outside of the classification voltage range, and detect, after detecting the indexing voltage, a second classification voltage within the classification voltage range. The control circuit is further configured to set the indicator signal to a first predetermined state indicating a power type based on the detected first classification voltage, indexing voltage and second classification voltage.

Circuit for indicating power level over a communication interface

A method of classification of power requirements in a power over Ethernet system, the method comprising: providing a first classification voltage for a first classification cycle time, the provided first classification voltage being within a classification voltage range defined by a lower classification voltage limit and upper classification voltage limit; measuring a first current flow responsive to the provided first classification voltage; subsequent to the first classification cycle time, providing a voltage outside of the classification voltage range for a classification indexing time; subsequent to the classification indexing time, providing a second classification voltage for a second classification cycle time, the provided second classification voltage being within the classification voltage range; measuring a second current flow responsive to the provided second classification voltage; determining a classification responsive to the measured first current flow and the measured second current flow; and allocating power responsive to the determined classification.

Power sourcing equipment comprising: a power input; an output port; a control circuit comprising a means for sensing that a voltage component of power received at the power input is above a pre-determined threshold; a non-uniform signal source; an impedance associated with the non-uniform signal source; and an electronically controlled switch responsive to the control circuit, the electronically controlled switch being arranged to switchably operatively connect the impedance to at least momentarily be seen across the output port; the control circuit being operative responsive to an output of the means for sensing to operatively connect the impedance via the operation of the electronically controlled switch; the electronically controlled switch being operative to disconnect the impedance from being seen across the output port in the absence of the indicative output.

Means for preventing unintended powering of a first power over Ethernet controller

A power over Ethernet controller comprising: a control circuitry; at least one powering port, each of the at least one powering port comprising a unique means for controlling a switch associated therewith; and at least one current limiter, each of the at least one current limiter being associated with a unique one of the at least one powering port, each of the at least one current limiter being operable to limit the current through the controlled switch to a particular one of a plurality of values, each of the values being in excess of 100 mA, the particular value being selected responsive to the control circuitry.

A power over Ethernet controller supporting a plurality of powering modes, the power over Ethernet controller comprising: a pair of power sourcing equipments; and a control circuit; the control circuit being operative to control each of the pair of power sourcing equipment units in one of a first mode and a second mode, the first mode comprising operating the pair of power sourcing equipments as a single power sourcing equipment operable to power a single powered device over communication cabling, and the second mode comprising operating each of the power sourcing equipments of the pair independently so as to each be operable to power an associated powered device over communication cabling.
