Processes and systems for producing potassium sulfate as a byproduct of a desulfurization process. Sulfur dioxide is absorbed from a flue gas using an ammonia-containing solution to produce an ammonium sulfate solution that contains dissolved ammonium sulfate. At least a first portion of the ammonium sulfate solution is heated before dissolving potassium chloride therein to form a slurry that contains potassium sulfate crystals and an ammonium chloride solution. The slurry is then cooled to precipitate additional potassium sulfate crystals, after which the potassium sulfate crystals are removed to yield a residual ammonium chloride solution that contains dissolved ammonium chloride and residual dissolved potassium sulfate. Ammonia is then absorbed into the residual ammonium chloride solution to further precipitate potassium sulfate crystals, which are removed to yield a residual ammonium chloride solution that is substantially free of dissolved potassium sulfate.

Process and system for removing sulfur dioxide from flue gas

A process and system for hydrogen sulfide capture from gas streams employing an absorber vessel in which the gas stream containing hydrogen sulfide is contacted with an absorbent solution to remove the hydrogen sulfide from the gas stream. The process and system may further employ an oxidation vessel in which sulfides and/or bisulfides in the absorbent solution are oxidized to produce a thiosulfate and/or sulfate, yielding a solution that can be used as fertilizer or other applications.

Systems and processes for removing hydrogen sulfide from gas streams

Flue gas desulfurization processes and systems that utilize ammonia as a reactant, and in which any hydrogen sulfide and/or mercaptans within the ammonia are separated during the desulfurization process so as to prevent their release into the atmosphere. The process and system entail absorbing acidic gases from a flue gas with a scrubbing media containing ammonium sulfate to produce a stream of scrubbed flue gas, collecting the scrubbing media containing the absorbed acidic gases, injecting into the collected scrubbing media a source of ammonia that is laden with hydrogen sulfide and/or mercaptans so that the injected ammonia is absorbed into and reacted with the collected scrubbing media, stripping the hydrogen sulfide and/or mercaptans from the collected scrubbing media by causing the hydrogen sulfide and/or mercaptans to exit the collected scrubbing media as stripped gases, and collecting the stripped gases without allowing the stripped gases to enter the stream of scrubbed flue gas.

Flue gas desulfurization systems and methods of use

Low-cost and energy-efficient COand HS capture is provided obtaining greater than 99.9% capture efficiency from pressurized gas. The acid species are captured in an ammonia solution, which is then regenerated by stripping the absorbed species. The solution can capture as much as 330 grams of COand HS per 1000 gram of water and when regenerated it produces pure pressurized acid gas containing more than 99.7% COand H2S. The absorption of the acid species is accomplished in two absorbers in-series, each having multiple stages. More than 95% of the acid species are captured in the first absorber and the balance is captured in the second absorber to below 10 ppm concentration in the outlet gas. The two absorbers operate at temperatures ranging from 20-70 degrees Celsius. The two absorbers and the main stripper of the alkaline solution operate at similar pressures ranging from 5-200 bara.

Ultra cleaning of combustion gas to near zero concentration of residual contaminants followed by the capture of COis provided. The high removal efficiency of residual contaminants is accomplished by direct contact cooling and scrubbing of the gas with cold water. The temperature of the combustion gas is reduced to 0-20 degrees Celsius to achieve maximum condensation and gas cleaning effect. The COis captured from the cooled and clean flue gas in a COabsorber utilizing an ammoniated solution or slurry in the NH&#x2014;CO&#x2014;HO system. The absorber operates at 0-20 degrees Celsius. Regeneration is accomplished by elevating the pressure and temperature of the CO-rich solution from the absorber. The COvapor pressure is high and a pressurized COstream, with low concentration of NHand water vapor is generated. The high pressure COstream is cooled and washed to recover the ammonia and moisture from the gas.

The present invention relates to processes and continuous processes for preparing gaseous products, and in particular, methane via the catalytic gasification of carbonaceous feedstocks in the presence of steam. In one aspect of the invention, the processes comprise at least partially combusting a first carbonaceous feedstock with an oxygen-rich gas stream, a recycle steam stream, and an aqueous make-up stream in an oxygen-blown gasifier, under suitable temperature and pressure, to generate a first gas stream comprising hydrogen, carbon monoxide and superheated steam; and reacting a second carbonaceous feedstock and the first gas stream in a catalytic gasifier in the presence of a gasification catalyst under suitable temperature and pressure to form a second gas stream comprising a plurality of gaseous products comprising methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide. The processes can comprise using at least one catalytic methanator to convert carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the gaseous products to methane and in certain embodiments do not recycle carbon monoxide or hydrogen to the gasifier. Heat energy recovered from the catalytic gasification can be used to generate the recycle steam stream.

Processes for gasification of a carbonaceous feedstock

An ammonia based CO2 capture system and method is provided in which multiple absorption stages are provided. Each absorption stage delivers an ionic solution at a predetermined temperature and contacts it with a flue gas stream.

Multi-stage CO2 removal system and method for processing a flue gas stream

A method and system for COcapture from flue gas uses an absorber vessel in which a flue gas stream containing COis contacted with an ammoniated solution to remove COfrom the flue gas, and a regenerator vessel in which COis released from the ammoniated solution. Parasitic energy consumption of the system can be reduced by adding to the ammoniated solution a promoter effective to enhance the formation of ammonium bicarbonate within the ammoniated solution. The amount of ammoniated solution recycled from the regenerator vessel to the absorber vessel is less than that which would be required using the ammoniated solution without the promoter for removal of the same amount of COfrom the flue gas.

A gas cleaning system, which is operative for cleaning a process gas containing carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide, comprises a combined cooling and cleaning system (), and a CO-absorber. The combined cooling and cleaning system () comprises a first gas-liquid contacting device () located upstream of the CO-absorber and operative for cooling the process gas by means of a cooling liquid, and for absorbing into the cooling liquid sulphur dioxide of the process gas, such that a cooling liquid containing sulphate is obtained. The combined cooling and cleaning system () further comprises a second gas-liquid contacting device () located downstream of the CO-absorber and operative for removing ammonia from the process gas, which has been treated in the CO-absorber, by means of bringing the process gas containing ammonia into contact with the cooling liquid containing sulphate.

A chilled ammonia based COcapture system and method is provided. A promoter is used to help accelerate certain capture reactions that occur substantially coincident to and/or as a result of contacting a chilled ammonia based ionic solution with a gas stream that contains CO.
