A system, method, and computer program product for booting a device are provided herein. The method includes the steps of synchronizing the device based on a downstream signal from a second device, receiving a software from the second device for booting on a reserved downstream channel of the second device, and storing the received first software in a volatile memory. The device does not pre-store the software in a non-volatile memory.

A non-volatile memory element initiates a write operation for one or more storage cells of the non-volatile memory element. The non-volatile memory element determines whether a progress threshold is satisfied for the write operation. A method for an adaptive forward error correction (FEC) in a passive optical network. The method comprises selecting an initial downstream FEC code to be applied on downstream data transmitted from an optical line terminal (OLT) to a plurality of optical network units (ONUs) of the PON; communicating the selected downstream FEC code to the plurality of ONUs; receiving at least one downstream bit error ratio (BER) value from at least one ONU of the plurality of ONUs, wherein the downstream BER value is measured respective to downstream data received at the at least one ONU; changing the selected downstream FEC code to a new downstream FEC code based on a plurality of downstream BER values measured by the at least one ONU; and communicating the new downstream FEC code to the plurality of ONUs.

Adaptive forward error correction in passive optical networks

A passive optical network (PON) packet processor for processing PON traffic includes a core processor for executing threads related to the processing of PON traffic and a plurality of hardware (HW) accelerators coupled to the core processor for accelerating the processing of said PON traffic. A memory unit is coupled to the core processor for maintaining program and traffic data. In an embodiment of the present invention, the PON packet processor includes a scheduler that optimizes the execution of PON related tasks.

The method comprises forming a maintenance optical link through the PON between the OLT and a collocated ONU, the OLT and its collocated ONU are each connected to an optical splitter; sending a ranging request from the OLT to the collocated ONU; in response to the ranging request, receiving, over the maintenance optical line, a ranging burst signal including at least a fault analysis detection pattern (FADP); and analyzing the FADP in the received signal by auto-correlating the FADP signal with an expected FADP signal, an uncorrelated event measured through the auto-correlation is indicative of a fault in the optical path of the PON and occurrence times of such events are indicative of the fault's location in the optical path.

Techniques for detecting optical faults in passive optical networks

A method for performing a protection in passive optical networks. The method comprises forming a protection maintenance link between an active optical line terminal (OLT) and a standby OLT; forming a synchronization link between the active OLT and the standby OLT; computing a base differential distance value; continuously measuring round trip time (RTT) values by the active OLT using the protection maintenance link; periodically sending at least RTT values calculated by the active OLT to the standby OLT over the synchronization link; and computing, by the standby OLT, a new RTT value based on at least a RTT value measured by the active OLT and a standby differential distance value, when a switch-over action is triggered, thereby allowing the standby OLT to serve optical network units (ONUs) in the PON without performing a ranging process.

Techniques for protecting passive optical networks

Apparatus and method to measure the quality of burst signals and to perform optical line diagnostics in and optical passive optical network (PON). Statistical information about phase noise (jitter), signal distortion, clock distortions, and any other effects present in burst signals is generated. The statistics are based on phase and bit-length distortions, direction and length of the effect as detected by a phase error detector integrated in a burst mode clock and data recovery (BCDR) circuit. The invention can be further adapted to perform optical line diagnostics to detect the root cause performance degradation and failures in the PON, thereby providing an optical layer supervision tool for monitoring the PON. The statistical information can be used to estimate the quality of service (QoS) per customer connected to the PON. In addition, the generated statistic information can be used to calibrate transmission parameters of optical network unit (ONU) transmitters.

Apparatus and method for measuring the quality of burst signals and performing optical line diagnostics

An enhanced passive optical network (PON) processor adapted to serve a plurality of PON applications is disclosed. The PON processor is a highly integrated communications processor that can operate in different PON modes including, but not limited to, a gigabit PON (GPON), a broadband PON (BPON), an Ethernet PON (EPON), or any combination thereof. In an embodiment of the present invention the provided PON is fabricated on a single integrated circuit (IC).

An apparatus automatically maintains bi-directional communication between an optical network unit (ONU) and a central office (CO) in a passive optical network (PON) when the CO changes from a first PON mode to a second PON mode. A grant scheduler and method for cyclically allocating time slots to traffic container (T-CONTs) included in one or more optical network units (ONUs) for transmitting respective data based on known respective service level agreements for each T-CONT. A first processing unit allocates fixed time slots in a current cycle to a fixed subset of T-CONTs and a second processing unit determines bandwidth demand for each T-CONT in a non-fixed subset of T-CONTs based on a dynamic bandwidth allocation input. A bandwidth allocation unit is coupled to the first processing unit and to the second processing unit for dynamically allocating time slots in the current cycle to the non-fixed subset of T-CONTs based on the determined bandwidth demand and bandwidth availability.
