Disclosed is a cylindrically-shaped hollow rod which is closed at one end, comprising a shirred tubular casing, and an integral, essentially cylindrically-shaped, plug-type closure element which is coaxially arranged in the cavity of the hollow rod and which comprises a deshirred tubing portion and an irregularly folded, compressed tubing portion, wherein a first one of the tubing portions is adjacent to the inside wall of the hollow rod, and the second tubing portion is surrounded by the first tubing portion, wherein one end of the first tubing portion, which points in the direction of the open end of the hollow rod, is bent back at an angle of 180.degree. and integrally changes into the second portion, and wherein the other end of the first tubing portion integrally changes into the hollow rod. Also disclosed is a process for producing the hollow rod having the end closure according to the invention.

Disclosed is a shirred sausage casing comprising a tubular casing having an area of increased thickness, e.g., a glued seam, running in the direction of its longitudinal axis. This area of increased thickness is helically arranged and extends transversely to the helical windings of the main-fold constituting the outside of the shirred sausage casing. The area of increased thickness is displaced by its width, between two contiguous windings of the main-fold. Also disclosed is a process for manufacturing a casing of this type.

A tubular casing for foodstuffs, in particular sausages, comprising a web (4) which is curved along its longitudinal axis and having its longitudinal edge regions (1, 2) bonded by a glued seam. The edge regions (1,2) meet or overlap and are bonded with a strip of film (6). The strip of film (6) comprises a material which is capable of shrinking in the direction of its longitudinal axis at a temperature between about 60.degree. to 100.degree. C. A pressure-sensitive adhesive is used for the bonding. The tubular casing carries an adhesion-promoting layer (5) on the surface adjacent to the adhesive layer (3). A tubular casing for foodstuffs, in particular sausages, comprising a web (4) which is curved along its longitudinal axis and having its longitudinal edge regions (1, 2) bonded by a glued seam. The edge regions (1, 2) meet or overlap and are bonded with a strip of film (6). A pressure-sensitive adhesive is used for the bonding. The tubular casing carries an adhesion-promoting layer (5) on the surface adjacent to the adhesive layer (3). Preferably, the strip of film and the edge regions of the web are comprised of a smoke-permeable material, and optionally the pressure-sensitive adhesive layers also have a smoke-permeable structure, such as perforations. The tubular casing can also be shirred.

Disclosed is a tubular casing consisting of a cellulose web or of a fiber-reinforced cellulose web, which is curved to form a tube and the longitudinal edge regions of which are bonded by an adhesive. On the inside and/or outside of the tubular casing, there is optionally a smoke-permeable adhesion-promoting layer, in particular a layer of a heat-cured cationic resin. The smoke-permeable adhesive layer contains a condensation product, cured at room temperature, of a polyamide-polyamine, an aliphatic polyamine or a polyamide with bifunctional halohydrins or derivatives thereof, such as epichlorohydrin. Optionally, the tubular casing is shirred, preferably with helical displacement of the seam zone. Also disclosed are processes for manufacturing the tubular casing and for using it as a packaging wrap for foodstuffs, in particular as an artificial sausage casing which can be smoked.
