A detergent powder contains soap-based noodles also containing 2 to 15% of free fatty acid and 1.5 to 5% of an inorganic salt such as sodium chloride. The free fatty acid improves the dissolution rate of the noodles, while the salt compensates for the softness of the soap composition, due to the free fatty acid, that makes noodle production difficult.

A liquid surfactant composition mobile at 20.degree.-80.degree. C. contains up to 80% anionic surfactant (sodium or potassium alkylbenzene sulphonate and/or alkyl sulphate), up to 80% nonionic surfactant and less than 10% by weight of water. The liquid composition may be sprayed onto a solid particulate absorbent material to form a detergent powder or component thereof.

Detergent compositions manufacturing process by spraying

Granular spray-dried detergent compositions containing a crystal-growth-modified carbonate-based structurant salt are produced by a process in which separate slurries of the structurant salt and of the main detergent composition are prepared in different vessels, then mixed and spray-dried. The structural salt is preferably the sodium carbonate/sodium sulphate double salt Burkeite, crystal-growth-modified by means of a polymeric polycarboxylate.

Process for the preparation of a granular detergent composition

Granular spray-dried detergent compositions including a liquid component unsuitable for spray-drying are prepared by co-spray-drying a slurry of a porous crystal-growth-modified carbonate-based carrier salt and a detergent slurry containing detergent-active compounds, builders and other suitable ingredients, and then treating the resulting composite powder with the liquid component. The porous carrier salt is preferably the sodium carbonate/sodium sulphate double salt Burkeite, crystal-growth-modified by means of a polymeric polycarboxylate.

A process for manufacturing detergent powder containing heat-sensitive components is disclosed. The process involves preparation of two separate crutcher slurries, one containing the relatively heat-stable components which is sprayed in a conventional manner and a second containing heat-sensitive components which is sprayed into the spray-drying tower at a level lower than the level at which the drying air is injected. Desirably the second slurry is sprayed in a direction which includes an upward component, so as to lengthen the pathway of the sprayed droplets.
