A ripple spring is provided having one or more conductive layers, and one or more non-conductive layers. The conductive layers and the non-conductive layers are laminated together to form a symmetrical stack of layers. A method is also provided for monitoring the ripple spring. The method includes the steps of providing a ripple spring that holds a winding in place, where the ripple spring is positioned at least partially within a stator slot defined within an electromechanical device. Providing a conductive layer disposed within the ripple spring, and generating signals from the conductive layer, the signals corresponding to at least one aspect of the ripple spring. An analyzing step analyzes the signals to determine the at least one aspect of the ripple spring, wherein the at least one aspect facilitates an identification of faults in the ripple spring.

Laser plasma spectroscopy apparatus and method for in situ depth profiling

An article, such as a turbine engine component, formed from a nickel-base superalloy, the nickel-base superalloy containing a &#x3b3;&#x2033; tetragonal phase and comprising aluminum, titanium, tantalum, niobium, chromium, molybdenum, and the balance nickel, wherein the article has a time dependent crack propagation resistance of at least about 20 hours to failure at about 1100&#xb0; F. in the presence of steam. An apparatus is provided for determining thickness and thermal conductivity for an insulative coating disposed on a substrate in an object. The apparatus includes a source for rapidly applying a multiple optical pulses on a surface of the object, where the surface comprises the insulative coating. The system further includes a recording system configured to collect data representative of the propagation of the optical pulses in the object. The apparatus further includes a processor coupled to the recording system and configured to receive the data from the recording system and configured to determine a thickness value and a thermal conductivity value for the insulative coating.

Method and apparatus for nondestructive evaluation of insulative coating

The apparatus includes a track mounted in the inlet of a compressor. A manipulator is mounted for movement about the track and carries three modules, the last of which mounts a tool head for movement in a Cartesian coordinate system and about the track. A measuring head measures the location of the airfoil surface. An abrading tool mounted on the third module removes surface material from the airfoil. Subsequently, a shot-peening device, either a flapper with embedded shot or free shot is impacted against the abraded surface to strengthen the surface. Final inspection is performed by a light and camera head mounted on the third module.

Apparatus and methods for repairing compressor airfoils in situ

In in-situ laser plasma spectroscopy (LPS) apparatus includes an enclosure for housing a laser energy source and associated signal coupling optics. A main fiber is attached to the enclosure at a first end of the main fiber, and attached to a probe at a second end of the main fiber. The main fiber is configured for transmitting input laser energy from the laser energy source to a target and for transmitting laser induced plasma emission signals back from the target. The probe has a single focal lens for directing the input laser energy from the main fiber to the target, and for directing the laser induced plasma emission signals from the target to the main fiber.

Fiber optical apparatus and system for in situ laser plasma spectroscopy

A portable Laser Plasma Spectroscopy (LPS) system and process is provided for performing in situ, near-real time, remote elemental analysis and identification of deposits or other foreign material found on surfaces of machine parts, such as turbine compressor blades or the like, wherein identification of the elemental constituents of a particular deposit is obtained without incurring significant ablative damage to the machine part substrate material underlying the deposit.
