Embodiments include methods for a network node of a 3GPP RAN. Such methods include determining a configuration that enables a UE to steer the UE's traffic between the 3GPP RAN and a WLAN without receiving a traffic steering command from the 3GPP RAN. The configuration includes a forward traffic steering configuration comprising a first plurality of thresholds/conditions for which the UE, when connected to 3GPP RAN, can initiate steering at least some of the UE's traffic from 3GPP RAN to WLAN; and a backward traffic steering configuration comprising a second plurality of thresholds/conditions for which the UE, when connected to WLAN, can initiate steering at least some of the UE's traffic from WLAN to 3GPP RAN. The backward traffic steering configuration includes threshold(s)/condition(s) based on different values of a same parameter as threshold(s)/condition(s) of the forward traffic steering configuration. The configuration is sent to the UE in a single message.

The present disclosure generally relates to the field of Radio Resource Control (RRC). More specifically, the present disclosure relates to techniques of supporting and initiating RRC connection establishment in a wireless communication network. A method embodiment relates to supporting RRC connection establishment in a wireless communication network and comprises setting up context information during a first RRC connection establishment procedure to establish a first RRC connection towards a radio access network element () of the wireless communication network implementing a first Radio Access Technology (RAT). The context information is associated with a wireless communication device () of the wireless communication network and is usable for a second RRC connection establishment procedure to establish a second RRC connection towards a radio access network element of the wireless communication network implementing a second RAT.

Embodiments include methods, performed by a first radio network node (RNN) in a wireless network, to establish a communications interface with a second RNN in the wireless network. Such methods include receiving, from a third RNN in the wireless network, a Transport Network Layer (TNL) address associated with the second RNN. Systems and methods relating to selection of user plane functions in a core network and a radio access network of a cellular communications network that take into consideration information related to application server selection are disclosed. In some embodiments, a method of operation of a network node in a cellular communications network that comprises a radio access network and a core network comprises selecting a user plane function for a protocol data unit session for a wireless device based on information related to application server selection such that the protocol data unit session for the wireless device utilizes the selected user plane function. In this manner, optimal user plane connectivity between an application client in the wireless device and an application server is provided.

There is provided support mechanisms for at least one adding and removing a cell from operation in a heterogeneous radio network having a first type of basic cell for providing basic radio coverage and a second type of cell associated to a basic cell as a capacity enhancing cell. A capacity enhancing cell is selectively switched on and off. When the capacity enhancing cell is shut down the cell does not exist over the air while cell configuration information is kept. When the capacity enhancing cell is switched on the cell becomes available again over the air interface. An indication of shut-down and a wake-up call message for switch-on of the capacity enhancing cell are communicated between a base station serving the capacity enhancing cell and a base station serving the basic cell. In this way energy savings can be supported without disrupting service availability.
