The present invention relates to new compounds of formula (I), wherein R, R, R, R, R, R, R, and Rindependently from each other are hydrogen; C-Calkyl; C-Calkenyl; C-C, cycloalkyl; C-Calkylene-C-C, cycloalkyl; Ris hydrogen; C-Calkyl; C-Calkenyl; C-Ccycloalkyl; C-Calkylene-C-Ccycloalkyl; C-Caryl; A is &#x2014;S&#x2014;; &#x2014;O&#x2014; or &#x2014;NR&#x2014;, wherein Rhas the same meanings as R; X is COOR; CONRR; SO, R; or SONRR, wherein R, R, R, R, R, and R, have independently from each other the same meanings as R; to their preparation and to their use as UV absorbers in cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations.

 Described are amino substituted hydroxyphenyl benzophenone derivatives of formula (I), wherein R, and Rindependently from each other are; C-Calkyl; C-C-alkenyl; C-Ccycloalkyl; C-Ccycloalkenyl; or R, and Rtogether with the linking nitrogen atom form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring; nis a number from 1 to 4; when n=1, Ris a saturated or unsaturated heterocyclic radical; hydroxy-C-Calkyl; cyclohexyl optionally substituted with one or more C-Calkyl; phenyl optionally substituted with a heterocyclic radical, aminocarbonyl or C-Calkylcarboxy; when nis 2, Ris an alkylene-, cycloalkylene- or alkenylene radical which is optionally substituted by a carbonyl- or carboxy group; o Rtogether with A forms a bivalent radical of the formula (Ia), wherein nis a number from 1 to 3; when nis 3, Ris an alkanetriyl radical; when nis 4, Ris an alkanetetrayl radical; A is &#x2014;O&#x2014;; or &#x2014;N(R)&#x2014;; and Ris hydrogen; C-Calkyl; or hydroxy-C-Calkyl. The compounds are useful as UV filters in sunscreen applications.

Amino substituted hydroxyphenyl benzophenone derivatives

UV absorber compositions are described, comprising (a) from 1 to 99% by weight of a hydroxyphenyltriazine compound of formula (I) wherein R, Rand Rare each independently of the others C-Calkyl; C-C,alkenyl; or phenyl-C-Calkyl; Ris hydrogen; or C-Calkyl; and (b) from 99 to 1% by weight of a further UV absorber selected from the group of (b) hydroxyphenyltriazines that are different from component (a), (b) benzotriazoles, (b) dibenzoylmethane derivatives and (b) camphor derivatives. There are described bis(resorcinyl)triazines of the formula ##STR1## The compounds according to the invention are particularly suitable as sunscreens in cosmetic, pharmaceutical and veterinary medicinal preparations.

Bis(resorcinyl)triazines useful as sunscreens in cosmetic preparations

The invention relates to a simple, one-step process for the preparation of triazines of formula ##STR1## which comprises reacting the benzonitrile of formula (I) ##STR2## with the benzonitrile of formula (II) ##STR3## in the temperature range from 180.degree. to 260.degree. C., in which formulae above R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are as defined in claim 1. The compounds prepared by this process find utility as UV absorbers or as starting materials for the preparation of UV absorbers.
