A connector assembly is provided for facilitating live connection of equipment in a switchgear. The assembly includes two circular plates, and conductive fingers which are arranged and spaced apart around the two plates to form a finger cluster with first open-end on a first cluster end and second open-end on an opposite second cluster end. Each open-end can receive a conductor therein. Each finger can include a first finger end and an opposite second finger end which form respective first and second cluster ends; two first interior grooves which are spaced-apart on an interior surface to receive a portion of respective plates; and first and second exterior grooves on an exterior surface around the first and second finger ends respectively. The assembly also includes first and second garter springs which are arranged around the fingers in respective first and second exterior grooves to apply a force against the fingers.

Enclosure and optimizations

A compact auxiliary connector can include two bushings each with an electrical connector(s), and a tubing connected between the two bushings to insulate an electrical cable, which is connected between electrical connectors of the two bushings. The electrical connector of each of the two bushings can be connected to an electrical device, a line or load bus or a combination thereof, according to the desired connection configuration. Each bushing may also include a flexible joint cover, such as a boot, to cover the connection of the bushing connectors to a bus, such as a primary bus. The compact auxiliary connector can manage live connections between auxiliary or other device(s) and line/load buses in a switchgear cabinet of a switchgear assembly. The bushings, tubing and flexible joint cover can be formed of insulating materials having desired dielectric strength according to the voltage applications.

Compact auxiliary connector

A front-accessible bus-connection mounting frame assembly in a draw out switchgear cabinet is fastened to the back wall of the breaker cabinet. The frame assembly provides for insertion and bayonet mounting of a primary bus connector's cylindrical conductor onto the mounting frame. The primary bus connector is bayonet mounted on the internal ribs of a central cylinder of the mounting frame assembly. The primary bus connector is then fixed in position by bolts front mounted down the central cylinder and out through a bus riser fitted at the back of the mounting frame assembly to establish electrical continuity. The central cylinder further provides a current transformer bushing tube around the primary bus connector and necessary flanges to mount the mounting frame assembly to the back wall and secure the current transformers around the bushing.

An electrical system includes an electrical device mounted within an electrical enclosure. A electrical cable is coupled to an electrical junction of the electrical device via a cable lug, the cable lug having at least two lug holes. A lug pad attaches the cable lug to the electrical device and has at least two pad holes. Each of the pad holes is aligned with a respective one of the lug holes, and at least one of the lug holes and the pad holes is a slotted hole for permitting angular adjustable positioning of the cable lug relative to the lug pad.

A high-speed arc terminator for an electrical power distribution system includes a sealed, evacuated housing, and a controllable mechanical switch having first and second electrically conductive contacts enclosed within the housing and adapted to be coupled to the power distribution system outside the housing. A trigger conductor extends into the housing and has an exposed end near the gap between the contacts when the contacts are in the open position. At least one of the contacts is movable between an open position in which the contacts are separated by a gap, and a closed position in which the contacts engage each other, and an operating mechanism is provided for moving the at least one contact between the open and closed positions. A high voltage source is controllably coupled to the trigger conductor for supplying a high-voltage pulse to the trigger conductor in response to the detection of an arcing fault. The high-voltage pulse produces an arc within the gap between the contacts, to shunt fault current from the power distribution system across the gap, from one of the contacts to the other, before the contacts engage each other.

An arc-resistant enclosure for electrical switchgear which includes solid front and back walls, a pair of solid side walls joined to the front and back walls, a ventilated roof joined to the side walls and the front and back walls, and a ventilated base joined to the side walls and the front and back walls. Internal partitions divide the space enclosed by the front, back, side, top and bottom walls into multiple compartments for housing different types of components. The ventilated base forms air-intake ports for admitting ambient air into a plurality of the compartments, and the ventilated roof forms air-exhaust ports for allowing air to be exhausted from the compartments. As air inside the enclosure is heated by the switchgear, the hot air rises through the switchgear compartments and is exhausted through the top air-exhaust ports, and replacement ambient air is drawn into the bottoms of the compartments through the air-intake ports.

An arcing fault protection system for a switchgear enclosure includes an arc diverter for rapidly grounding or crow-barring the electrical distribution system in response to the detection of arcing fault currents in the system. Detection is done through a comparison of current on the main bus against the current through the feeder lines, whereby a difference in current gives a first detection signal. The first detection signal can be used directly, or AND'ed with other detection signals from optical sensors on the feeder lines, to provide the activation signal for operating the arc diverter.

A medium voltage controller for electrical equipment, such as motors, transformers, reactors, and capacitors, having an arc resistant cabinet, swaged internal electrical connections, a one-piece self-aligning withdrawable finger cluster, a pull-out instrument compartment, a load discharge device, cast fuse holders, disconnect switch, a switch illuminator, low power current transformers, and an optical temperature measuring system. The arc resistant cabinet relies on the pressure generated by an arc fault to provide the sealing action to contain the fault forces. The cabinet's rear panels are inside the cabinet and the panel lips mate to edges of the cabinet opening. The front doors each have a series of latching tabs along one side and a hinge along the opposing side. A dimple-in-a-dimple joint provides shear strength for panel joints. At the top of the cabinet is an exhaust vent.

A medium voltage controller for electrical equipment, such as motors, transformers, reactors, and capacitors, having a load discharge device. The load discharge device is compact and provides fast earthing of the load-side cables. The device has a scissors-type linkage and is charged by compressing at least one spring. The scissors-linkage, when in an almost-straight-line alignment, holds the compressed springs. An actuator moves one member of the scissors-linkage, thereby removing the holding alignment of the scissors-linkage. The springs move an earthing bar at high acceleration to ground the line-side cables.

A medium voltage controller for electrical equipment, having cast fuse holders, a disconnect switch, a switch illuminator, low power current transformers, and an optical temperature measuring system. The fuse holder includes a cast housing with smooth rounded surfaces that reduce corona. The disconnect switch has cast components that provide terminal points, mounting surfaces, and contact surfaces. The switch illuminator provides illumination of the disconnect switch internals. The contactor assembly is mounted in a truck and moves on a rail system that includes a pull-down handle with rails. The truck rolls out of the cabinet on the extended rails for easy removal from the cabinet. The truck, and contactor assembly, is racked in by pushing the truck into the cabinet and then raising the handle, which forces the draw-out fingers to engage the contact stabs.

A medium voltage controller for electrical equipment, such as motors, transformers, reactors, and capacitors, having an arc resistant cabinet, swaged internal electrical connections, a one-piece self-aligning withdrawable finger cluster, a pull-out instrument compartment, a load discharge device, cast fuse holders, disconnect switch, a switch illuminator, low power current transformers, and an optical temperature measuring system. The one-piece self-aligning withdrawable finger cluster includes a plurality of members formed to surround a mating stab for making a removable electrical connection. The throat of the finger cluster is smaller than the mating stab, and, when mated with the stab, opposing members are biased against the stab.

A medium voltage controller for electrical equipment, such as motors, transformers, reactors, and capacitors, having an arc resistant cabinet, swaged internal electrical connections, a one-piece self-aligning withdrawable finger cluster, a pull-out instrument compartment, a load discharge device, cast fuse holders, disconnect switch, a switch illuminator, low power current transformers, and an optical temperature measuring system. The pull-out instrument compartment includes a sliding rack to which a hinged instrument mounting panel is attached. The mounting panel slides out of the compartment and swings away from the opening in the cabinet, allowing access to the cabinet internals.

Medium voltage motor control center instrument compartment

A medium to high voltage load circuit interrupter and method for breaking the flow of electric current in a line having a load and a source. A main switch is connected in series with the line. A metal resistor having a positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (PTC element) is connected in series to the arcing switch, wherein the metal resistor and arcing switch are connected in parallel with the main switch. The main switch moves from the closed position to the open position prior to the arcing switch moving from the closed position to the open position. The circuit interrupter further includes an arc chute having a channel and electrically coupled to the arcing switch wherein the arcing switch is positioned within the channel when the arcing switch is in a closed position. In one embodiment, the PTC element is positioned on an insulator positioned between a ground and the main switch and an arcing switch. In another embodiment, the PTC element is positioned within a channel in the arc chute. The PTC element is, for example, in the shape of a serpentine, and is comprised, for example, of a pure metal such as pure tungsten, iron, tantalum or chromium.

The present invention provides an enclosure for housing a circuit breaker therein which utilizes a flange system to prevent enclosure components from separating from each other when an electrical fault occurs therein. The flange system includes flanges, on enclosure walls and doors, which slide into corresponding channels and interlock therein to prevent the components from separating and hot gases from escaping the enclosure when an electrical fault occurs.
