Methods for acid diversion in a hydrocarbon-containing subterranean formation are disclosed. The methods include injecting an acid diversion agent comprising a water-soluble or dispersible branched polyhydroxyetheramine and injecting an acidic solution into a well which is in contact with the hydrocarbon-containing subterranean formation. Preferably, the acid solution is diverted toward a zone of the formation that has a lower permeability to fluid than an adjacent zone. This process improves the permeability of the hydrocarbon-containing subterranean formation to hydrocarbons, while decreasing the permeability of the formation to water or brine.

Permeability of subterranean reservoirs using acid diversion

According to one embodiment, a treatment fluid for a well includes: (a) a water-soluble polymer, wherein the water-soluble polymer comprises a polymer of at least one non-acidic ethylenically unsaturated polar monomer; (b) an organic crosslinker comprising amine groups, wherein the organic crosslinker is capable of crosslinking the water-soluble polymer; (c) a salt of a weak Bronsted base and a Bronsted acid; and (d) water; wherein the treatment fluid is a crosslinkable polymer composition. According to another embodiment, a method for blocking the permeability of a portion of a subterranean formation penetrated by a wellbore is provided, the method including the steps of: (a) selecting the portion of the subterranean formation to be treated; (b) selecting estimated treatment conditions, wherein the estimated treatment conditions comprise temperature over a treatment time; (c) forming a treatment fluid that is a crosslinkable polymer composition comprising: (i) a water-soluble polymer, wherein the water-soluble polymer comprises a polymer of at least one non-acidic ethylenically unsaturated polar monomer; (ii) an organic crosslinker comprising amine groups, wherein the organic crosslinker is capable of crosslinking the water-soluble polymer; (iii) a salt of a weak Bronsted base and a Bronsted acid; and (iv) water; (d) selecting the water-soluble polymer, the crosslinker, the salt of a weak Bronsted base and a Bronsted acid, and the water, and the proportions thereof, such that the gelation time of the treatment fluid is at least 1 hour when tested under the estimated treatment conditions; and (e) injecting the treatment fluid through the wellbore into the portion of the subterranean formation.

A treatment fluid for a well including: (a) a water-soluble polymer, wherein the water-soluble polymer comprises a polymer of at least one non-acidic ethylenically unsaturated polar monomer; (b) an organic crosslinker comprising amine groups, wherein the organic crosslinker is capable of crosslinking the water-soluble polymer; (c) a Lewis acid; and (d) water; wherein the treatment fluid is a crosslinkable polymer composition. Provided are methods of using fluid loss control additives that comprise a water-soluble polymer with hydrophobic or hydrophilic modification. In one embodiment, a method of providing at least some degree of fluid loss control during a subterranean treatment is provided. In an example of such a method, the method may comprise providing a treatment fluid comprising an aqueous liquid and a fluid loss control additive, the fluid loss control additive comprising a water-soluble polymer with hydrophobic or hydrophilic modification; and introducing the treatment fluid into a well bore that penetrates a subterranean formation, wherein there is at least a partial reduction in fluid loss into at least a portion of the subterranean formation from the treatment fluid and/or another aqueous fluid introduced into well bore subsequent to the treatment fluid.

Methods useful for controlling fluid loss in subterranean treatments

Methods comprising providing a relative permeability modifier that comprises a hydrophilic polymer backbone with a hydrophobic modification and incorporating at least one cationic compound onto the hydrophilic polymer backbone. The hydrophilic polymer is one or more of: a polyacrylamide; a polyvinylamine; a poly(vinylamine/vinyl alcohol); an alkyl acrylate polymer; cellulose; chitosan; a polyamide; a polyetheramine; a polyhydroxyetheramine; a polylysine; a polysulfone; a gum; or a starch. The hydrophobic modification is achieved either by reacting the hydrophilic polymer with a hydrophobic compound or by a polymerization reaction product of a hydrophilic monomer and a hydrophobically modified hydrophilic monomer. The hydrophobic compound has an alkyl chain length from 4 to 22 carbons and is one or more of: an alkyl acrylate; an alkyl methacrylate; an alkyl acrylamide; an alkyl methacrylamide; or an alkyl dimethylammoniumethyl methacrylate halide.

Hydrophobically and cationically modified relative permeability modifiers and associated methods

Method of diverting fluids in a subterranean formation including the steps of providing a first fluid comprising an aqueous fluid and a hydrophobically modified water-soluble relative permeability modifier; introducing the first fluid into a well bore such that the first treatment fluid penetrates into a portion of the subterranean formation in a sufficient amount so as to substantially divert a second treatment fluid to another portion of the subterranean formation. Then, a second aqueous fluid is introduced into the well bore and substantially diverted from the portion of the subterranean formation penetrated with the first treatment fluid. In some cases, a well treatment operation, such as acid stimulation operation, a clay stabilization operation, or a scale inhibition operation, is performed using the second fluid.

Methods useful for diverting aqueous fluids in subterranean operations

A treatment fluid for a well includes: (a) a water-soluble polymer, wherein the water-soluble polymer comprises a polymer of at least one non-acidic ethylenically unsaturated polar monomer; (b) an organic crosslinker comprising amine groups, wherein the organic crosslinker is capable of crosslinking the water-soluble polymer; (c) a weak organic acid; and (d) water; wherein the treatment fluid is a crosslinkable polymer composition.

Weak organic acid as gelation retarder for crosslinkable polymer compositions

Selective placement of conformance treatments in multi-zone well completions. A method includes injecting a relative permeability modifier into a zone and optimizing a ratio of desired fluid to undesired fluid produced from the zone, including adjusting at least one flow control device between fully open and fully closed configurations. Another method includes injecting a relative permeability modifier into multiple zones, one at a time, via respective flow control devices, and then producing fluid from each of the zones. Another method includes identifying which of the zones to treat by, for each of the zones: a) closing flow control devices corresponding to the other zones, and b) evaluating fluid produced from the zone; and injecting a conformance treatment into the zones identified as the zones to treat.

Selective placement of conformance treatments in multi-zone well completions

Methods comprising introducing a hydrophobically and cationically modified relative permeability modifier into a portion of a subterranean formation. The hydrophobically and cationically modified relative permeability modifier comprises a hydrophilic polymer backbone with a hydrophobic modification and a cationic modification. The cationic modification may comprise at least one cationic compound comprising an alkyl chain length of from 1 to 3 carbons.

Methods comprising identifying an interval of a subterranean formation to be treated, the interval comprising multiple portions, each portion having a different effective permeability; introducing a relative-permeability modifier into the interval; and, introducing a sealant into the interval. The relative-permeability modifier modifies the interval to have a more uniform effective permeability to water-based fluids. The relative-permeability modifier comprises a water-soluble polymer. The more uniform effective permeability of the interval allows for a more uniform treatment of the interval by the sealant than would be allowed without treatment of the interval with the relative-permeability modifier.

Methods for placement of sealant in subterranean intervals

According to one embodiment, a treatment fluid for a well includes: (a) a water-soluble polymer, wherein the water-soluble polymer comprises a polymer of at least one non-acidic ethylenically unsaturated polar monomer; (b) an organic crosslinker comprising amine groups, wherein the organic crosslinker is capable of crosslinking the water-soluble polymer; (c) a Lewis acid; and (d) water; wherein the treatment fluid is a crosslinkable polymer composition. According to another embodiment, a method for blocking the permeability of a portion of a subterranean formation penetrated by a wellbore is provided, the method including the steps of: (a) selecting the portion of the subterranean formation to be treated; (b) selecting estimated treatment conditions, wherein the estimated treatment conditions comprise temperature over a treatment time; (c) forming a treatment fluid that is a crosslinkable polymer composition comprising: (i) a water-soluble polymer, wherein the water-soluble polymer comprises a polymer of at least one non-acidic ethylenically unsaturated polar monomer; (ii) an organic crosslinker comprising amine groups, wherein the organic crosslinker is capable of crosslinking the water-soluble polymer; (iii) a Lewis acid; and (iv) water; (d) selecting the water-soluble polymer, the crosslinker, the Lewis acid, and the water, and the proportions thereof, such that the gelation time of the treatment fluid is at least 1 hour when tested under the estimated treatment conditions; and (e) injecting the treatment fluid through the wellbore into the portion of the subterranean formation.

Exemplary embodiments provide methods of treating a subterranean formation to improve gas production therefrom. Exemplary embodiments of the methods comprise introducing a cationic polyorganosiloxane into the subterranean formation, wherein the cationic polyorganosiloxane comprises at least two quaternary ammonium groups.

Methods for increasing gas production from a subterranean formation

Methods of using relative permeability modifiers for the diversion of aqueous fluids during subterranean operations are provided. An embodiment of the present invention provides a method of diverting fluids in a subterranean formation that may comprise providing a treatment fluid comprising an aqueous fluid and a relative permeability modifier that comprises water-soluble polymer with hydrophobic or hydrophilic modification; introducing the treatment fluid into a well bore that penetrates the subterranean formation; and at least a first portion of the treatment fluid to penetrate into a portion of the subterranean formation so as to substantially divert a second portion of the treatment fluid or another aqueous treatment fluid to another portion of the subterranean.
