A fastener and a nosepiece for use in attaching lath to a support. The fastener includes a screw and a spacing element, in which the spacing element is adapted to threadingly penetrate the lath and abut the support. The lath is retained between the spacing element and the head of the screw and is thereby held away from the support in order to allow plaster to properly extrude through openings in the lath. The nosepiece is attachable to a driving tool and has rigid prongs which reach through openings in the lath. Travel of a bit on the driving tool is limited so that automatic disengagement occurs to prevent over-driving of the screw. The prongs ensure that the lath is held a predetermined distance from the support.

A two piece hole-drilling and fastener-driving assembly consists of a three-sectioned drill bit and a three-sectioned drive collar. The drill bit has a fluted drilling section, a hexagonal driving section and a tapered section adapted to be received in a complementarily shape chuck of a rotary hammer. The drive collar has a first hexagonal portion which mates with the hexagonal drill bit section and is driven thereby. A second tubular portion receives the drilling section when the hexagonal portions are engaged. A third portion includes a fastener-engaging recess. This portion may take the form of a removable socket and the collar provided with a spring-biased ball retainer to hold the socket thereon and a second such retainer to hold the collar on the drill bit. The drill bit is inserted in the rotary hammer chuck and a hole is drilled in the workpiece. The drive collar is then slipped over the drill bit and a self-tapping fastener driven into the just-drilled hole.

A self-drilling and tapping anchor for use in masonry structures which includes an upper, tapping thread portion and a lower, stabilizing and dust receiving shank portion intermediate the tapping thread and a drill tip. The lower shank has a cross-sectional configuration which defines a maximum and minimum radial dimension with the maximum dimension being greater than or equal to the hole being drilled to axially stabilize and support the fastener as it is drilled into the masonry. The minimum radial dimension and the wall of the hole forming a reservoir into which masonry dust is received during drilling.

Self-drilling and tapping masonry anchor

An expansion anchor device for use in masonry structure which is capable of drilling a hole in the structure and being set without the necessity of removal of the device from the hole. A drill tip portion with a conical upper region is interconnected to a generally cylindrical sleeve portion through a frangible wall. Helical flute grooves are formed on the outer surface of the sleeve to permit exhaust of drilled material from the hole.
