A cigarette smoking article achieves very low levels of CO and other gas phase components by means of substantial air dilution, but has an acceptable pressure drop and sufficient delivery of particulate matter to provide a flavorful smoke. The filter has two sections, an upstream section which has substantially no pressure drop thereacross and a downstream section which provides substantially all the pressure drop of the filter. Dilution air is admitted to the upstream section of the filter to mix with mainstream smoke before it passes through the downstream section of the filter and thereby reduce the CO and gas phase levels in the smoke.

Low CO cigarette

Cigarettes have a tobacco rod including smokable material circumscribed by a paper wrapper. The paper wrapper includes a cellulosic base web (e.g., flax and/or wood pulp fibers) and particles of at least one inorganic filler material. The inorganic filler material includes particles of agglomerated calcium carbonate particles.

Cigarettes have a tobacco rod including smokable material circumscribed by a paper wrapper. The inorganic filler material includes calcium sulfate, and normally fibers of calcium sulfate having an aspect ratio of about 30.

Cigarettes have filter elements which have a relatively low efficiency for filtering particulate matter of tobacco smoke and a relatively high pressure drop. Such filter elements are provided by shredding, gathering or pleating a sheet-like web of a paper which has a low air permeability and exhibits a pH above about 9. The paper used to provide the filter material of the filter elements incorporates a magnesium hydroxide filter.
